When starting/idleing my 08 C-RV makes a very loud growling/vibration/knocking noise at the lower front end,my mechanic thinks that it is the air con compressor (very expensive). Has anyone experienced similar and might know what it is?

It sounds as though your car has two seperate problems. The first problem with the vibration that goes away when you let off the gas pedal is caused by a bad INNER CV joint. It only vibrates when you are accelerating because that is when the joint is under stress. Your vehicle has two axles, each with an inner and an outer joint. My suggestion is to have a competent shop determine which is the bad side and replace the entire axle. The second vibration which occurs at any speed is most likely cause by either a bad tire, or a bent rim.

The compressor is supposed to cycle on and off. The idle problem may not be the compressor but the solenoid that controls the idle when the compressor is engaged. A bad clutch would present in different ways, i.e. metallic scraping noise. I doubt at this point you are damaging the system by running the a/c.

Hub bearing in the right rear is the most likely problem

It sounds like it is def. the wheel bearing. If you can get it on a hoist and let it down with something to stop one side of vehicle at a time and let other side spin freely you will likely be able to determine which side. Or if you have no hoist, jack up vehicle one side at a time and spin wheel listen for growling and also move tire in and out to check for looseness.

this is from the start up clutch inside the gearbox- CONTACT a dealer there is a warranty extension on some cars and yours maybe included.
