If the car dies like you flipped a killswitch and wont even try to crank the motor I would definitely lean toward the ignition switch in the steering column is fried. Once it shorts out the car dies and wont crank.
I'm assuming that you have a fuel injected car, so the fact that you can smell fuel is not a good thing. You might have a fuel leak somewhere, or your EVAP canister is clogged. Pull the hose from the EVAP canister, and set your car to "ON" to make sure that you are getting a good amount of fuel. You can also see if your are getting spark by pulling a plug and reconnecting it to the wire and turning over your car. If it doesn't spark, then you need a new distributor or distributor cap/rotor. Your coil may also be bad.
When this happens you should check to see if it has spark. The coils could be going bad or the main relay could be going bad if it has no spark. If it has spark then check for fuel pressure. If it doesnt have fuel pressure chances are that its the pump. I think those cars have a problem with pumps going out in them.
check if the fuel pump is working, if you have someone near the tank and someone else crank motor you should be able to hear a bzzzzzz rom the tank from the pump. if no noise is heard then hit or thump the tank, this can make a fuel pump start to work again, if it starts, then the pump is almost dead
Sounds like the same thing I ran into (again mine is a Mits Mir 2001). I guess I'm late in replying though. Never knew about this site. Anyway, its probably the timing belt. My car died too just like it ran outta fuel. However I made the mistake of cranking the engine. That's a bad idea, you may end up damaging the engine.
