WHen selecting Drive on the steering column, should we slect the basic largeD or the small D within the shaded circle???

The d with the circle is overdrive. This is the selection you should use unless you are in a situation where it is shifting in and out of overdrive to much for example you are riding in traffic in hilly terrain at speeds around 35-45 mph and it is constantly shifting in and out of overdrive,then you would use the big D.Or if you are coming down the mountains and you want more engine braking so you don't have to use your brakes to much.

Air distribution within the vehicle is determined by the function selector switch position. Two airflow mode doors are used to direct airflow within the heater core and evaporator core housing. The function selector switch/cable assembly is used to position these airflow mode doors. Refer to Section 412-00 for description and operation of each of the system functions.

Function Selector Cable Assembly
The function selector cable assembly moves the airflow mode doors to the desired position using a 2-sided pull-pull type cable assembly. The function selector controls the cable movement. The end of the cable assembly attaches to the airflow mode door/temperature blend door actuating assembly which transfers the cable movement to the 2 airflow mode doors.
An electrical switch is incorporated into the function selector to notify the A/C switch assembly if DEFROST or FLOOR/DEFROST is selected. When DEFROST or FLOOR/DEFROST is selected, the A/C switch assembly will disable the RECIRC request button and send an A/C request to the powertrain control module (PCM) regardless of the A/C request button indicator ON/OFF status.

Shift Controls, Automatic Transmission The transmission shift control linkage or cable transfers the transmission operating mode from the selector lever to the transmission. The indicated transmission position on the steering column is transferred to a shift lever on the bottom of the steering column. On vehicles equipped with cable-operated shift systems, the indicated position of the transmission selector lever is transferred to the transmission through the shift cane, then to the cable, and down to the transmission manual shift lever at the transmission. On vehicles equipped with shift rod assemblies, the rod transfers the indicated transmission selector level position through a bell crank assembly to a control rod. The control rod transfers the indicated position to the transmission assembly.

Automatic Transmission Manual Linkage Adjustments
  1. With the engine stopped and the parking brake applied, place the transmission selector lever at the steering column in the D (DRIVE position) for C6 applications and in the (D) (OVERDRIVE position) for AOD and E4OD applications, and hold against the D or (D) stop by applying a three-pound force to the selector lever knob.
  1. Loosen the shift rod adjusting nut at point A. Refer to the following illustrations.
  1. Shift the manual lever at the transmission into the (D) (overdrive) position for E4OD, by moving the lever all the way rearward, then forward two detents.
  1. With the selector lever and transmission manual lever in the(D) position, tighten the nut at point A to 17-24 Nm (12-18 ft-lb) torque. Use care to prevent motion between the stud and rod.
  1. Remove the three-pound force from the steering column selector lever knob.
  1. Operate the shift lever in all positions to make certain that the manual lever at the transmission is in full detent in all gear ranges. Re-adjust the linkage if required.
  1. On F-Super Duty Chassis Cab and Motorhome and Commercial Chassis recheck for correct operation of the automatic transmission selector indicator (PRN(D)21). Refer to Section 11-04A, Steering Column, Shift Rod Within Tube. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Under no circumstances will it be permissible to adjust linkage in any position other than the(D) position for E4OD applications.

Automatic Transmission Shift Cable Adjustment
  1. From inside the vehicle, place the column shift select lever in the DRIVE position (C6) of the OVERDRIVE (AOD and E4OD). Hang a three-pound weight on the selector lever.
  1. Raise vehicle on a hoist.
  1. Remove the shift cable from the transmission lever ball stud.
  1. Pull down the lock tab on the shift cable body.
  1. Position the transmission shift lever in the DRIVE position (C6) or the OVERDRIVE position (AOD and E4OD). This is three detents from the front-most lever position with the first position counting as one.
  1. Connect the cable end fitting to the transmission lever ball stud.
  1. Push up on the lock tab to lock the cable in the correctly adjusted position.
  1. Lower vehicle down from hoist and remove the three-pound weight from the column shift select lever.
  1. After making the adjustment, check for park engagement. Check the transmission control lever in all detent positions with the engine running to make sure correct detent/transmission actions. Readjust if necessary.

1994 buick skylark - column shift selector will not shift transmission into reverse. I can shift into drive and nuetral only. shade tree mechanic says he taped? the gear cog but it has stopped working...


wat we need to do is dsiconnect trans shift linkage an manually move selector shaft to all positions at trans to see if problem is internal (trans) or in our shift linkage cables. if trans selector moves in all positions at trans then we need to try shifter in car,with linkage unhooked to chek proper steering column shift linkage motion.problem could b in column detents or shift cables(linkage). to access linkage hookup at trans mayb little difficult BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE

Okay, my boyfriend owns a 2000 ford f-250 super duty and your prolly wondering as to why im asking about this instead of him ... well im more mechanically inclined then he is lol funny huh... okay heres...


It sounds like the shift tube bushings are worn out. There are usually 2 u shaped clamps that have nylon bushings that hold the shift tube to the steering clumn. If loose, that throws off the shift position, could be btween 2 gears at once, and throws off the park - neutral safety switch. Fix that first.

  • GEAR SELECTOR LEVER - INCREASED EFFORT TO SHIFT FROM DRIVE TO PARK
Publication Date: November 1, 2004
FORD: 2002-2005 Explorer, Mountaineer ISSUE: Some 2002-2005 Explorer 4dr/Mountaineer vehicles, may require a greater effort to move the gear selector lever (shift lever) from drive to park. This may be due to a time delay with the brake shift interlock (BSI) pin retraction.
ACTION: To service, replace the BSI switch. Refer to the following Service Procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
  1. Remove the two (2) fasteners supporting the instrument panel knee bolster from below the steering column and remove the cover (Figure 1).

  2. Remove the three (3) fasteners supporting the steering column lower shroud and remove the cover (Figure 2).

  3. Remove the three (3) wiring bundle carrier fasteners from the bottom of the steering column to allow movement while removing the BSI switch. It may be necessary to release the connectors from the multifunction switch (Figure 3).

  4. Remove the BSI fasteners (T-30 on the side and T-20 on the bottom) (Figure 4).

  5. Pull the BSI tab on the bottom of the column downward to help free the BSI from the column housing.
  6. Break the two (2) side tabs off the BSI by the white wiring connector (Figure 5).

  7. Push the locking tab on the white connector towards the wiring to release the connector from the BSI. Be careful not to damage the connector or wiring. If the connector does not free easily, a very small flat screwdriver may be used to help lift the locking tab (Figure 6).

  8. Connect the wiring to the new BSI. Ensure all clips are fully engaged to prevent the connector from pulling free.
  9. Reinstall the BSI onto the steering column and reinstall fasteners (Figure 7).

  10. Check BSI function. With the key in the accessories or run position, press the brake pedal. The BSI pin should retract on brake application, and spring up one (1) second after releasing the brake pedal. Repeat several times.
  11. Reinstall fasteners to connect wiring bundle carrier to the steering column. Make sure all connections to the multifunction switch unit are secured properly.
  12. Reassemble steering column in reverse order. Ensure rubber gap hider around shift lever is properly seated on the shroud.
  13. Cycle the shift lever from park to drive and drive back to park several times to verify improved shift effort.

Gear shift lever in column is loose


your problem with the gear selector is in the item 25 these are 2 plastic bushings that wear out and cause the gear selector feels loose, you should also check the item 27 this item has one or two screws loose and cause the gear selector feels loose

My steering wheel just "free-wheels" I have lost all steering capibilities.


sounds like a bad "Rag Joint ', that;s a piece of tire carcass material (a two inch circle at the bottom of the steering collumn) where the steering wheel connects to the rack and pinion(It;s to kill vibration)
It's fairly easy to replace, also easy to get your steering wheel upside down

if the rag joint's good the steering rack and pinion assy must have a stripped gear.
This is rare, check the rag joint firstit's a small ***** to replace but not impossible usualy you have to unbolt the collumn inside the cab (Two bolts under the bottom of the dashboard, there's a cover to remove beneath the stering column)
