Burning oil smell 03 montero sport

I have noticed a burning smell coming from the engine. It worsens wile climbing hills. I heard it may be a gasket and that they commonly go out around 70,000.

bought used and really love, but i kept smelling burnt oil, checked underneath but no visible leaks for almost a year, last few weeks stronger and now leak is visible. does look like it is around a gasket, over 130000 miles but still drives like dream, where is best place and most reasonable to take for repair: dealership or other?

It's most likely the rear cam seals (o-rings) which is a pretty simply DIY, especially on the 3.5L model. The o-ring is only about $5.00 from the dealer (each, you need one for each side).

I had the same problem. I was told i needed to have the o-ring replaced. The dealership quoted me about $350 for parts and service.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE A BAD TORQUE CONVERTER

The two most common failures in torque converters are excessive slipping due to bad seals and locking problems. If the torque converter is slipping, you will have poor acceleration, but the engine will rev up quickly. It is especially noticeable on hill climbs; engine RPM will be high, but the vehicle does not go as fast as it should, and in severe cases may not be able to climb the hill.

Lockup problems may be harder to detect. At highway speeds, most modern torque converters have a locking mechanism to eliminate slip. Failure to lock may not be noticeable except as a decline in highway fuel mileage. Failure to unlock is readily apparent; the engine may stall on deceleration, or hard braking is required to slow the vehicle, which then stalls.

My car keep blowing white smoke them randomly stopping sometimes no smoke and my coolaint is always low down

If youre wondering about a blown head gasket or cracked head, smell your exhaust. If it smells like anti freeze then youre right. If not, you have a coolant leak and your car is burning oil from one reason or another. Check your oil also. Usually when head gasket goes bad you will get water in the oil. The oil will start getting creamy after a while....if it looks like it has water in it, it probably does.

Why does my 98 dodge caravan have trouble climbing hills?

A transmission issue would give vibration tremendously during uphill. If you're not getting the vibration, or burning smell of transmission fluid, suspect clogged catalytic converters.

Burning smell

Check the valve covers for small leaks, the oil will run down onto the exhaust manifold and this causes the burning smell. Oil leaks on this model and engine is a very common issue.

My car emits white smoke from muffler when climbing higher road level. What's wrong?

It's burning oil -- moreso when the engine is under a load, as in going up a hill.

How many miles on the engine ?
