The starter is located on the passenger side, right at the bellhousing for the transmission underneath the car. it is held in by 2 15mm bolts. make sure battery is disconnected before moving wires off of it, as it will zap you!. remove the wires from the solenoid on the starter, and make sure they match up correctly on the new one. bolt the new starter in with the bendix gear facing the flywheel. secure hardware, reconnect battery, and give it a test.

if the starter continues to run and does not disengage, quickly disconnect the battery, remove 2 bolts on starter, and place a shim.

you may need a shim if the starter wont line up with the flywheel correctly. any local parts house has these readily available.

I have an inboard/outboard engine, thats a chevy...i need to change the starter

starter has 2 bolts on the bottom with some shims. There are a few wires one large and 2 small. They are labeled on the solenoid so can be transferred to the new starter. Remember to remove one battery cable.

Put in new starter after rethreading the hole

A lot of V-8 Chevys, GM's, for that matter, need shims between the starter and the block. Go to your local auto-parts store and just tell the guy what you need!
