BMW 318i 1988 2 door starting problem

Can anyone help me and my baby? My BMW 318i 1988 does not start. I drove it for 2 hours and then parked.  Within 10 minutes I attempted to start it.  I heard it crank then all systems shut down and an electronic whirring sound came from the engine.  I tried to start it several times, but the sound still kept coming from the engine.  To stop the noise, I  had to remove battery cables.  I waited a few minutes and tried reconnecting the battery cable.  The positive cable sparked and smoked a little (as if a short circuit occurred.)  As soon as I I reconnected the battery cables, the same electronic whirring sound came from the engine.  I also checked the fuses in the fuse box, but they all appear okay.  I think it may be a blocked or blown starter.  Does anyone have any ideas?  Thank you very much and God Bless.

Alan, I would have BMW look at it. Your tech is throwing parts at it and is clueless as to problem. I could give you suggestions (I used to work for BMW NA) and there are a ton of possibilities, some simple and cheap others a little more costly but no where near $3500. Let a BMW tech test it, read the codes and solve your problem. 2 good reasons for BMW to do it - #1 they guarantee their work for 1yr/12k miles and # 2 they rely on their CSI (Customer Service Index) and fixing it right keeps their status up

Got a preowned 2004 318i executive series E46 facelifted two months ago, comes with 2 sets of ignition key with remote on fob. Suddenly, 1 key that can operate the keyless entry will not start the engine....

How
Unlock vehicle. Enter vehicle. Close driver's door. Switch ignition ON and OFF. Remove ignition key. Press and hold unlock button Fig. 2 [2]. Press lock button Fig. 2 [1] briefly 3 times within 10 seconds keeping unlock button [2] depressed. Release unlock button Fig. 2 [2]. Central locking system locks and unlocks rapidly to indicate correct programming. Repeat above procedure if central locking system does not work.
NOTE: A maximum of 4 keys can be programmed. Carry out programming procedure for each key within 30 seconds.

I don't know that this will work, but try using the key and opening the door at the same time, both sides, this procedure works for locked doors and a dead battery, hope this helps, let me know.

You need to make sure you have a good drive belt and verify that the tension is working,if all seems normal then get the alternator or the wiring to it tested.

Sounds like you have an electrical problem. I think it would be an idea to let an expert have a look at it even if they only diagnose the problem and you conduct the repair yourself.
