Upon returning from an 8 hour trip, when I exited the expressway and slowed to a sprre of lass than 50 mph. my check engine light came on. I purchased a Actron CP9180 AutoScanner to help me in understanding the problem. I read the code which was P0303, Mod $10 Cylindar 3 Misfire Detected. It also provided the following:
Global OBDII, Non OBD State OBD Check
Mil Status: ON
Codes Found: 1
Monitors OK: 3
Monitors Inc: 5
Monitors N/A: 3
I need help with what does these code mean as to what is wrong with this vehicle. The car is a 1998 Lincoln Town Car.
Service Engine Soon light came on, Checked the code and got a
P0301(Misfire cylinder 1) so I swapped the coil with cylinder 2 and
cleared the check engine code. I then drove the car again until it came
back on and I got a P0302 (misfire cylinder 2) So that tells me that
the Coil is bad. I replaced the coil and boot plug and all the spark
plugs but I am still having a misfire. I would assume it was a fuel
injector but why would it change from cylinder one to cylinder two
misfire when I move the coil?

p0171 = fuel system too lean, this means vacuum leak or faulty oxygen sensor
p0303 = cylinder 3 misfire
p0325 = knock sensor malfunction.
p0303 and p0325 - i can see these working together, if a cylinder misfires, it will cause the knock sensor to trip. I would lean towards the coil and or ignition module, along with a faulty oxygen sensor.
Code P0303 means that there is a misfire detected on cylinder #3. This could becaused by anything from a worn out spark plug to a blown cylinder head gasket, a faulty fuel injector, a bad ignition coil, or a leaking intake manifold gasket. I have also seen this type of code caused by clogged-up EGR ports in the intake manifold on certain engines. "Freeze Frame Data" stored in your Engine computer along with the fault code is designed to help identify what engine conditions (high speed/slow speed, heavy load/light load, etc.) are producing the misfire. This helps a lot in identifying exactly what is causing the cylinder to misfire.
One way to eliminate some of the possible causes is to swap parts with another cylinder to see if the code changes.
If you have "Coil-On-Plug" ignition, you can swap the coil on #3 cylinder with the coil on #4 Cylinder and swap the #3 spark plug with the #2 spark plug. Then clear the codes and drive the car till the Check Engine (or Service Engine Soon) light comes back on.
If it still gives you P0303, then it is not being caused by the plug or the coil. It could be any of the other possible causes listed above.
If it now gives you P304, replace the bad ignition coil that is now on #4 cylinder.
If it now gives you P302, Then replacement of all the spark plugs is recommended.

4. High or low fuel pressure. Thats the list of things to check. This is a #3 cylinder misfire. There is also TSB about #3 injector needing added heat protection. This could definitely be the cause. I start at plugs and go from there. Hope this helps. Thank you, Lee
ok a P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected is a hard code meaning your problem is not intermetent,if you all ready changed the spark plugs and wires,the next step is to check the injector for the #3 cylinder,also if you can try using another ignition coil,check the crank position sensor and last try moving the plugs aroud to see if the code changes or if you get a new one,i dont think you will be stranded but the engine performance is crapy.
