Question about 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Overheating overheats then drops back to normal;then overheats again;then back to normal? Ok...same problem. Car will run perfectly for a day or two then will decide to overheat. Temp guage will rise to 3/4 or higher then fall then rise then fall and so on. New thermostat installed ,rad flushed, new cooling fan relay, and new rad cap but the problem continues. Fan motor was also replaced 2 years ago Is it the cooling fan sensor?

Ok, here is what I have found with the overheating problem with my 2002 PT Cruiser. I have got all the symptoms that everyone else has gotten form, it heats then cools down, gets hot when it idles, gets hot when AC is turned on. The bottom line here is that it gets hot when it is not going down the road or it may raise a little then go back to normal. This is what I have found after a new water pump, radiator, thermostat, cooling fan. What is happening is that the engine or radiator are starting to collect what I like to call calcium particles. so when the particles break loose they circulate around in the cooling system, when the radiator cap opens to let water out to the recory bottle these particles go out with it, however when the cap closes and tries to seal the radiator back up the particles get stuck under the seal therefor the radiator never pressurizes and continues to let water out filling up the recovery bottlle and then boiling over. I have proved this theory several times (and you can too) by letting the car cool down after a overheating tantrum and removing the radiator cap. Look at the rubber seal and i will bet you find these calcium particles built up on it not letting the cap reseal. I have cleaned the cap and put it back on and driven sometimes 2-3 days without a problem. The reason the temp will go up and down at times is because it deoends on whether or no the coolant has washed all the particles away when it opens and closes. Do a heavy duty and thorough cleaning of the cooling system making sure to get these particles out and you should be fine.

Engine overheating

Overheating can be extremely bad for a car. Back in the days of carburetors, when engines were made of steel, overheating was much more common, and less damaging. But the modern engine has far less tolerance, with its aluminum blocks and, often, aluminum heads.

Many head gaskets have been blown out by overheat issues. Many heads have been cracked. These are not cheap repairs. Therefore, be vigilant and watch that heat gauge (thermometer). If your car starts to overheat, pull to the side of the road, and let it idle (do not give it a fast idle - that only worked in the days before electric fans) and, if that does not seem to be working, shut it off.

Bohdan Bodnar wrote: "The 2.2/2.5 liter cooling systems *MUST* be purged of air before operation; otherwise, coolant flow blockage will result (i.e., hot, possibly REALLY hot, engine). Partial purging will cause the engine to run hotter than normal; the temperature will gradually drop to normal as the system purges itself over several days/weeks."

So my car was started but i forgot it was so i went to start again, then my car starts overheating & and also i had fluid leaking too?

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.

Hello... I got problem with my honda odyssey. For the past 3 days, if i start the engine, after 5 min the temperature will goes up to HOT and engine indicator light-up. I turn-off the engine and then start...

Your English is very good.

From what you have described, which is a rapid over heating of the radiator coolant fluid and therefore a hot engine condition, it would appear that the thermostat in the engine's cooling system is faulty.

If the thermostat is sticking in the closed or nearly closed position temporarily, there will be no flow or very little coolant flow between the engine and the radiator and the engine will overheat.

You have advised that after the engine is shut off , and radiator coolant fluid has cooled, you re-start the engine and drive the car without the overheating condition occurring again and the radiator coolant temperature is normal. This time there is no overheating because the thermostat is working normally.

You should have the thermostat replaced as soon as possible because allowing the engine to overheat can cause very expensive engine damage.

If you had a continuing overheating condition then I would suspect both the thermostat and the water pump. However as the overheating seems to be only temporary, and clears itself after you have shut down the engine and re-started it 10 minutes later (without further overheating arising) then I think you only have a faulty thermostat.

Please also check that the electric fans which draw air through the radiator are operating. These run on a temperature sensor and will switch on automatically once the radiator coolant fluid reaches a certain temperature and then switch off again when the fluid temperature reduces. You will hear them running once they start up. If these fans are not working the radiator coolant can quickly overheat in various driving and temperature conditions because there will be insufficient air flow through the radiator to cool the fluid. If the temperature sensor is faulty or has died, or if the electric motors running the fans are faulty, the fans will not operate.

I hope this helps.

When idling my jeep overheats. The cooling fan is running and it speeds up when temperature goes up. The temperature gets close to 260 degrees and the engine tries to stall. when I start moving it cools...

At idling speed an engine does build up a lot of heat and the cooling fan will kick in. In slow moving traffic or traffic jams the temperature gauge can touch the red - particularly on hot days. The reason it cools down when you start moving is because of the air flow through the radiator.

Presumably there are no leaks from the cooling system otherwise you would have mentioned it. In normal circumstances the fan will not be running as you are driving at speed, as the air-flow through the radiator is sufficient to cool things. The fan only kicks in to get rid of excess heat - and this usually occurs at idling speed or after you have parked the car.

If the fan is running all the time as you drive, this points to either a fault in the fan switch, or the car is running too hot. presumably in normal driving the fan isn't running and the temperature gauge reads normal?

It is common - in stationary traffic many cars overheat (particularly big engined models) try to stall and 'cut out'. Restarting can be difficult until the engine cools down.

Is your car overheating in normal driving conditions or just at idle speed? Overheating in normal driving conditions can be caused by things like a failing water pump, blocked radiator, collapsed hose, faulty thermostat or, in the worst case scenario, cylinder head problems.

Overheating at idling speed is 'common'. Check your coolant level. If your car isn't using/losing coolant then there probably is no major problem. You can flush out the cooling system and refill with new coolant - and also check your radiator. Are the cooling fins crumbling with age? Or maybe they're partly clogged with insects and debris from the road? A blast with a hosepipe wil sort that out ..

The question is how much does your car overheat in normal driving? If it doesn't .. it appears as though you have nothing to worry about as such. Most cars have 2 speed fans... the 2nd faster stage kicks in at some point dependant on engine temperature. Perfectly normal.
