Question about 1998 Eagle Talon

Open Question

Very rough idling on 1998 eagle talon

I just recently bought this car.She has less then 95,000 miles on her 2.0 non turbo. She ran absolutely perfect till the idler/tensioner pulley froze up or "walled out". Had her towed to place i bought her from they replaced "both" pulleys and she's been rough idling ever since. Scan tools showed misfire on cylinder 1 bank 1. Took her to shop to have a compression test done on her to make sure i hadn't bent a valve. Nope she has good compression. We decided to replace all 4 fuel injectors AFTER we replaced the coil pack, all 4 plugs, and wires. She ran fine just like she used to till engine light came back on an she was right back at it. We don't know if it's a camshaft/crankshaft sensor those both deal w/ pcm an cylinder 1 or if its tha pcm just needing re-set or sumthin' electrical.

U really need to have a dealer do a main stream data diagnosis to see what is going on, if u have cleared the PCM mem then the codes still return there is a problem in that circuit, but remember no necessarily the sensor is the issue, it can be the wiring the connector the PCM anything in the circuit.

SOURCE: my eagle talon will not start

Search for a way to reset the alarm. Also take the fuel lines off the engine and test the fuel pressure. You want to eliminate the fuel pump not working. If it has a reset button for the fuel pump try that. I would start at the fuel pump and worlk my way up.

SOURCE: up my boost on 97 eagle talon

Before you up your boost at all. Get youself an SAFC, do all the free mods to open your air and fuel circulation.

you can find the free mods on dsmtuners.com

safc is going to be your tuning tool for time being.

once you turn your boost up to lets say 14psi, thats adding alot more air to your engine, and nothing to add more gas.

get the safc to richen your system up to compensate for the extra air.

Pump pulley

Water pumps are cheep and need to be replaced about every 5 years , sometimes less. Change the pump, it costs 40 bucks. Use Indian Head gasket shellac on both sides of the paper gasket. If not it will leak. Clean both mating surfaces. You need that pump to be perfect. The belt tension is adjusted by the idler wheel under your power steering pump. Loosen the wheel bolt and then you can adjust the belt tension by tightening the bolt that causes the idler to slide up and down. It's hidden behind the mounting plate for the idler

After the waterpump was changed on my 98 Malibu the car is leaking oil and making a ticking noise. They tried to tell me it was the timing tensioner could that be true?

When you change a water pump on a vehicle with a timing belt
you change the tensioners & idler pulleys as well

Using the wrong oil & not changing it every 4000 miles or less
causes the tensioners to stick

I have a 1998 6 cylinder toyota camry that just 2 days ago i heard a pop while driving and the rpm's where at 3 then took a long time to get to 2. Ran it like that till got to a gas station when it...

I dont think its the motor but it sounds like maybe something inside the timing belt let go, when you do the timing belt did you replace the tensioner and pulley, if not then maybe one of the idler pulleys for the belt went bad, or it may just be a bad ignition coil or fuel pump. i would have the computer scanned first to see if there are any codes. the codes are very helpful as they will tell you if something has failed like a coil. 140,000 miles is not alot for a camry and i dont think its a bad engine. good day.

My serpintine belt keep coming off i replaced pulley and tensione

Typically a belt will come off if all the pulleys are not perfectly aligned.
If you recently replaced a power steering pump and the pulley was not properly seated all the way down where the pulley front is flush with the metal shaft from the pump then you will shred the belts and they will come off. If you ONLY swapped the tensioner and idler pulley you may have installed the tensioner so it isn't parallel to the other pulleys but that would be very rare because it would have been difficult to get the belt on if it was not properly installed. There also could be a damaged plastic pulley that could be "cutting" into the belt which would also cause the belt to slip off.

There are 2 bolts that hold the tensioner to the engine. The pulley is part of the assembly when bought at a dealership.

I have a 2000 ML320 and my idler pulley chattered how do i fix also my cerpertine belt is shredded. can you provide a diagrahm and or route. prob # 2 windows do not roll up,they are all stuck in the last...

All the bearings on all the accessory points in the belt path are subject to seizure. The tensioner pulley and the idler are especially suspect. All the pulleys must turn easily and smoothly by hand. If there is noise, grinding or rough action, replace the item that's bad. The belt must be replaced if it's not perfect. The route is shown in your owner manual, but it goes around the outside of all the items with the exception of the fan blades and the tensioner. Thus, it goes from the alternator in to the fan, back out to the idler, over to the power steering, down to the A/C, to the tensioner, down to the crank, and back up to the fan. To put the new one on, put a 15 mm socket on the nut in the middle of the tensioner pulley, and pull it all the way down to allow the belt to pass over the pulley. The windows should not all stop at once, unless there's a blown fuse to the control panel. Do the mirrors work?

How do you loosen the serpentine belt

That wasn't right though. There is a 1/2 slot for a 1/2 inch breaker bar and when two holes are lined up you stick a drill bit or similar peice through to lock it in place till you get the belt routed then pull back alittle bit on the breaker bar to remove tension from the drill bit . Remove the drill bit and release tension on breaker bar and remove it to put tension on the belt. Then check alignment , positioning, routing of the belt visually.
