1987 VW Cabriolet, clutch cable not broken but doesnt work?

While driving in 1st gear and trying to go into 2nd, I pushed the clutch in and could not get it into gear. Then I heard a muffled "clunk" from under the hood. It sounded more as a hit then a snap. Then I could not get any gears in. The clutch cable does NOT seem snaped or broken. It just looks really lose, as if it had streched. Pushing the clutch all the way in I can actually see the cable move. Could the cable have gotten lose/streched? Or am I low/out of fluid? how do I fix it? I still cannot go into gear.

CHECK CLUTCH CABLE! IF CABLES IS LOOSE YOU COULD HARDLY ENGAGE 1ST AND 2ND GEAR.
IF YOUR CAR IS USING CLUTCH CABLE, ADJUST IT
IF IT USES FLUID, CHECK THE RUBBER CAPS.

SOURCE: VW GOLF 1.4 1999 S. Gearbox makes whining sound at idle

No good news on this one I think
Your whining sound problem is the Layshaft bearings in the gearbox are badly worn. It also seems that the baulk rings are damaged on 5th gear.

I would check the many shifter bushing for being worn, they are a problem on these cars. You can find shifter rebuild kits on e-Bay. I've had alot of these cars and I've noticed the samething, until you slowdown to about 10-15 MPH, they don't want to go into first gear, I suspect that it was designed that way so that you don't get it into first gear when the car is going over a certain speed. The gears are very close together.

The clutch works this way: press the pedal, the pedal pulls a cable, that cable moves a lever with a bearing at its end, that bearing presses on the extremities of the disk spring, that spring deforms and lifts the pressure plate disengaging the clutch plate.
In your case the spring is no longer doing disengaging because either the bearing or the extremities of the disk spring have failed - most likely the latter. You will gonna have to replace the pressure plate assembly.

I have a 1980 VW Golf. I cannot get reverse gear or 1st and 2nd without switching the car off and then selecting the gear? 3rd and 4th works fine.please help

hydraulic clutch needs attention
replace slave cylinder fill with fluid and bleed the air out
replacing the clutch master cylinder would also be a good idea as at 1980 model will be worn out if not replaced before hand
if cable clutch , replace the cable

Car will not engauge into 1st or 2nd gear

the gear grinding noise is because the clutch plate is not fully disengaging and the input shaft is still driving. If you did not use the same length of push rod then the slave cylinder is not moving enough to disengage the clutch. Check it out that with the pedal on the floor the piston in the slave cylinder should be almost to the edge of the slave cylinder . That is where It should be to be working properly

I am having problem putting my bmw e90 2005 into first gear. if you put it into 2nd gear and then push it into first it goes in. any ideas.

Try to double clutch when you downshift from 2nd to 1st ( while driving be in 2nd put in the clutch go to neutral pull out clutch rev it a lil and put the clutch back in and then shift to first) what this does is that it aligns the gears and it might go into 1st alot smoother. Happened to my 86 Toyota and never had problem with it after that

My '03 VW Jetta GLS 1.8T Manual Trans grinds when shifting into second gear?

the synchros are not DIY, when they start to go it will grind when the RPMs are higher like getting on a highway, you can try double clutching and see if that helps.

Sounds like a plastic grommet is broken. You'll have to raise the car and check the cables/linkage at each end. You'll probably find on one end that the grommet is missing. And you probably not be able to buy just the grommet. you will have to replace the entire cable.

They rust, the clutch cable is a $10 part takes ten minutes to change. Attaches to clutch lever on tranny through the firewall and to the petal. the hardest part of the job is fitting under steering wheel! Only tool is a flashlight to see what you are doing!
