You did not mention the Toyota car model that you have. Please check this helpful link along with the other links inside it ,which may give you some light to resolve your problem as to how you put the alternator belt, hope it helps:-
Below the altenator is a tensioning pully, insert a 3/8" ratchet or breaker bar in the square hole on the tensioner and release the tension on the surpentine belt and remove the belt. Route the new surpentine belt in place up to the altenator and take the tension off the tensioner and put the belt over the altenator pully. Double check to make sure the belt is riding correctly on all the pullies before starting. Crank the engine over several times before starting to seat the belt.
I would rate this a 5 in difficulty. If you have a metric socket set, basic hand tools and a supertine belt tool it's fairly easy repair. You can rent a surpentine belt tool at Autozone.
Disconnect the battery
remove the cowling
remove the supertine belt from the altenator pully
disconnect the red wire on the back of the altenator
disconnect the harness plug from the altenator
remove the bolts holding the altenator to the mounting brackets.
Reverse the process with the new altenator and it it's done.
Make sure your battery is charged before you start the engine a low battery can cause damage to your new altenator.
disconnect positive battery cable first. Then disconnect wires on altenator then remove bolts holding altenater in place remove belt. Mount new altenater in place dont tighten bolts till you get belt back on then apply pressure to snug up belt while tightening bolts. Some times its easier to put wires back on starter before mounting just be careful not to damage wires. When this is all done reconnect positive cable and start car. While car is running disconnect positive cable if car stays running you are done reconnect cable if it does you did something wrong recheck your work. Its possible to buy a part bad right from the start.
Disconnect battery, disconnect altenator wire harness. Remove bolts and pull out altenator. When reinstalling new altenator, there should be an adjustable pulley called tensioner pulley that will either have to be pulled up or pushed down in order to put belt back on.
Hi. If it has the serpentine belt which I belive an 89 does, all you should have to do is put a wrench on the tensiner and push it backward, its spring loaded so you hold it back, slip the belt inplace and then release the tensioner. if the tensioner wont spring back then you may need a new one.
Ok. There should be a tension pulley on the engine that the belt runs through. You can notice it because it is not attached to anything except the engine block or a support bar. You can lift if up or push it down with a wrench or socket and wrench. It moves so it can give you space to put the belt on. After the belt is on, release teh pulley and it will tighten up (tension) your belt and your done.
If by chance you do not have this tension pulley, then you have to only put one bolt in the altenator, put the belt on like normal, pry the altenator in place with the belt on it, then put the last bolt in.
I found on my 92 lumina 3.1 the easiest way to change the belt is to have two people handy (you and a helper) push the belt tensioner (which is more in the middle of the belt system, its the only thing that has give when pressure is applied) down (which will loosen the belt) have your partner slip the belt off the altenator (which should be on the very top of the belt system on the passenger side) and just pay attention to the way the belt is routed as you remove it, put the new one on (routed correctly) push the tensioner again have your partner slip it back over the altenator....and you have a new belt on with no tools :)
just pay good attention to the routing of the belt, and i also think there is a black cover over the belt which needs to be removed before the old belt can be taken off (if you dont see it at first you will find it) it has 3 bolts i think and also a diagram of the routing....
TIP: the tensioner will take some muscle to move down, and yes the belt is running over it....
It's actually super easy.
All you need is your year and make alternator belt and a wrench.
Take off the existing altenator, take off the old belt.
Once the altenator is off you'll be able to look further down below where the altenator was. You'll see a metal wheel that's a little bigger than the one on the altenator. This is where the new belt needs to wrap around.
I found it alot easier to wrap the belts around the two wheels before putting the altenator back on the engine.
Make sure that all bolts and seals are sound. (that's the last thing you need falling off in the middle of nowhere!)
