The problem lies in the door frame then. You will need to remove the push button in the door frame and check if it is grounded. You should have noticed that your dome light also stopped working. This is because it doesn't know when the driver door has been opened. Therefore, no alert that you left your headlights on, and no dome light. Check wiring.
If it's a V-6 engine the filter is located underneath the driver's side just inside where the frame is, on the 4 cylinder it's located under the intake manifold near the front of the engine.
Its usually behind the engine by the firewall or bolted to the frame under the drivers side a couple feet in front of the fuel tank. Ive never seen one anywhere else on a stock vehicle. Hope that helps.
Look for ground issue, in my opinion the frame should not be used as a ground, always makes problems, eventually, but run an external ground to the lights and view results....
It depends if you have a V6 or an inline 4 cylinder. If you have a V6 then it's along the inner frame rail under the driver's side seat. If you have the 4 banger it's near the exhaust manifold. You'll have to undo the manifold to get to the filter.
