Question about 1978 Pontiac Bonneville

1 Answer

Engine knocks at startup

Working on a 1979 Pontiac Bonneville with a factory Buick engine. The engine knocks when starting, but only does it once. After turning the car off, and restarting at a later time the same day, it starts fine. The engine runs great after started. It sounds like maybe emissions? I am not sure. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Jeremy

It could be the oil pump, its not a bad idea to check the type of engine oil you are using maybe you can go a little higher in grade,
you can also try to use STP Engine oil treatment for petrol (gas) as addative to the engine oil it may help.
Hope this helps!

I need to know how to replace the expansion plug on a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville

You will need an exspansion plug tool for this. You start by getting a hammer and a punch, and knock the old plug out, vise grips or pliers will help In the removal process, because you do not want to knock the plug into the engine. Then using the tool you want to drive the plug into the hole evenly, until is is about 1\16 of an inch recessed in.

How do I adjust my timing for a 79 Pontiac Bonneville Brougham, and if my lifters are worn is this a job that I could do myself or something I may want the shop to handle

To set the timing, unplug the vacuum line to distributer and plug. Loosen the hold down bolt and with the light set timing at 12 degrees if it is a pontiac engine,if chevy engine set at 8 degree's,if buich engine 15 degree's,if olds engine set at 20 degree's.They used all these engines in pontiac product'a in 1979.To change lifter's it's a pretty big job,I talked to ya earlier about your veh., and usually if you replace lifter's due to wear the came should really be replaced due to wear and that's a pretty big job for most. If you really want to keep your veh. for a while that is the proper repair procedure. Most shop's probably won't do one without the other to warranty their work.
