If it's in the center driveline then have the u-joints checked. the drive axles also called cv joints have always been an issue with subaru, probably cause the have all 4 wheels going and each axle has 2 boots that makes 8 boots that are usualy popped when when the vehicle goes off road. also if you abuse your 5-speed manual trans. (like I do) the output-shaft bearing will start to click (like mine).

2009 xt forester grinding noise when engaging clutch and stalling

Are all 4 tires and wheels the same size??? (will bind the driveline up)

You could have a bad differential or transfer case.

Jack up all 4 wheels, spin one rear wheel with it in gear, the other should spin in the opposite direction, do the same for the front. If they spin OK, take it out of gear, now spin BOTH rear wheels, if they won't, you might have a bad transfer case.

How would i know if my cv joint is going bad on my 94 ford ranger 2 wheel drive

A two wheel drive ranger does not have any c.v. Joints. It does have u joints in the rear drive shaft. Worn out u joints can cause vibrations at highway speeds, squeezing noises at low speeds, and in some cases a clunking noise when the transmiissin is placed in park or drive. You can check them by pulling the drive shaft and ratting the joint. If it is stiff or loose than they are likely bad. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. My daughters 1988 Subaru GL 4WD Wagon needs the rear driveline replaced...how difficult is that to do at home.

At 21 years old it is important to look at the value of the vehicle and the ability to acquire used parts. If you are replacing the rear end you may be looking at big money if you had to tap the new market ..it could be terribly expensive. Look at things like body rust and engine health before diving into a major expense.

Subaru vibration

I had similar problem with my '99 outback. Replaced the front half shafts and seemed much better. A few months later seemed to be comming back so replaced the driver side shaft again and the problem disappeared. I had put in rebuilt shafts and the driver side shaft was not rebuilt correctly.
