Hi I just bough this car but it has a big steering problem, When I turn either way I have to turn the wheel like a quarter turn before the car starts to turn and when I turn right it feels like there is no power steering and I have to turn the wheel back because it doesn't counter steer on its own when I turn right. Any help would be great thanks.

first and it's sort of obvious... make sure the motor is off.... look for a cap at the front of the motor where the fan belt is... may even be labled power steering ... you add the fluid there

The power steering is electric on that car. It has a electric motor on the column, and a control module. There are several causes that could be the problem. You need to have it scanned to get a better idea of what to do. If you can give me the codes you get then I will be glad to advise you on what's best. Good Luck

There is NO power steering fluid in a 06 Cobalt. It is electric! This is a flaw that GM is not willing to come to terms with. Try topix.com for the list of over 350 people that this has happened to. Also, the dealership wants YOU to pay for it. There should be a recall. VERY dangerous!

sounds like the drive belt is loose or the pump is not developing enough pressure at low speed.
Check the tension of the belt that drives the PS pump, since it is working at higher revs, which points to this type of problem. The belt should be quite stiff and possible to push it maybe a half inch in the middle of the longest run. Any more means it is too slack.
Tensioning may involve loosening the pump mount bolts and swinging the pump away from the engine till the belt is firm, and tightening the bolts.
Overtightened belts can wear bearings out prematurely though, don't go nuts with the tension!
If the belt is ok, and you aren't losing fluid, the pump is on its way out, or the rack seals are bypassing fluid back to the pump too quickly.
