The front indicators are held in by a phillips screw which can be seen if you look down from the top of the lamp, it only needs to be loosened a turn, there's a plastic tag as a safety clip which needs to be pressed towards the headlamp at the same time as you pull the indicator lamp forwards. Once the lamp is out the bulb holder twists 1/4 turn to release.

Pull the trans front cover and you will see the solenoids mounted to the valve body. NOTE: DON NOT USE aftermarket parts for any of the valves. Also use the Volvo pan sealer only. Save yourself the headaches.

Volvo s40 1998 bulb warning light on, what does this mean

If by that you mean:

"warning light goes on when I start the motor, and goes off after first time I use the brake pedal"

, don't worry, it's normal, it's how it work. If it stays on even after the use of brakes, you have a bad bulb on brake tail lamps

Replacing rear numberplate lights

The lights should be accessible by reaching up above the license plate and finding the housing they sit in. For the guy with the shift indicator lights out, you will need to pull the center console and remove the bulb from the holder and pop the new one in.
