Either replace the O2 sensors, or put a black piece of electrical tape over the check engine light.

How many o2 sensors are on a 1999 Silverado 5.3

The 1999 5.3 V8 engine had 4 oxygen sensors. There are two catalytic converters on this engine, one on the driver side of the engine, and one on the passenger side of the engine. This is important to know, as the number of oxygen sensors is directly related to the number of catalytic converters on the vehicle. Driver side is referred to as Bank 1, passenger side is referred to as Bank 2. This is very important to know when looking up replacement oxygen sensors. There is one oxygen sensor in front of, or before the catalytic converter, usually referred to as a pre-catalyst O2 sensor. There is also one behind, or after the catalytic converter, usually referred to as a post-catalyst oxygen sensor. So, you have two oxygen sensors on Bank 1, and two oxygen sensors on Bank 2, for a grand total of 4 oxygen sensors.

My 2000 Cadillac Deville engine light on. Engine code PO420

Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

A code PO420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
  • An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
  • The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
  • Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
  • Retarded spark timing
  • The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of reading

  • Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.
  • Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).
  • Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2), replace if necessary
  • Replace the catalytic converter

Check engine light is on for 2003 Silverado Chev. Only 38,000 miles on the truck and I am being told it is catalytic converter? all other sensors have been changed. Why?

Check with your local GM dealer. Your catalytic converter may be under warranty. Federal emissions warranties are usually 8 years/80,000 miles or more. Unless your vehicle has a salvaged title.

Engine code p0420

The P0420 code is set when the oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter gives a reading the same or very close to the reading of the oxygen sensor(s) before the catalytic converter.

There are usually three possible causes...
The front oxygen sensor (before the cat) is giving an incorrect reading.
The rear oxygen sensor (after the cat) is giving an incorrect reading.
The catalytic converter is not working properly.

Since you recently replaced the cat, the logic points to the sensors, but it could be the cat again. Aftermarket converters are usually smaller than OEM and don't last as long.

Our Subaru encountered this issue several years ago under warranty. The first time the dealer replaced the front oxygen sensor. This was the cheapest repair and since it was an intermittent problem I am sure they hoped to delay the issue until the warranty was up. The second time they replaced the catalytic converter and we haven't had any more issues.

Oxygen sensor replacement

It's something you can with simple tools, you have four O2 sensors. Your going to have to get the truck rescanned or if you have the DTC code, you can find out which O2 sensor has gone bad so you can replace it. Your going to have Two upstream O2 sensors on each exhaust bank, one O2 sensor before the Catalytic Converter, and the last one after the Catalytic Converter. Its like replacing a Spark plug and you can pick up the O2 sensor at any large Auto Parts store with a can of WD 40. Just unclip the wire leads to the O2 sensor and then with a O2 sensor socket or hint close end wrench and hammer, you can remove the O2 sensor from the exhaust pipe. Good luck and be safe.

MY 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA GOT ENGINE AND VSC LIGHTS ON. ON THE DEALER, THE COMPUTER READ A OXIGEN SENSOR B1 S1Y GOT THE PART, I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO INSTALLED AND WHERE IS LOCATED.

That model Sequoia should have four oxygen sensors. There will be two in each exhaust line. One will be in front of the catalytic converter, and one will be behind it.

B1 should mean bank one. This is the driver side. S1 is probably the oxygen sensor located before the catalytic converter; however, I am not certain of the number sequence here.

The sensors screw into the exhaust pipe. They will have wires coming out the top.

2oo0 chevy blazer cel and code p0171 and p0174

Depending on the engine it will have between 4 and 2.

If you had a straight 4 or 6 engine then there would be only 2, one on the exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe and then one just after the catalytic converter.

If you have a "V" engine (V8, V6) then you have an oxygen sensor on each exhaust manifold and will have a catalytic converter for each bank of the V. There will also be an oxygen sensor downstream of each converter as well. In this case there would be 4 oxygen sensors.

Catylitic Converter is not fully consuming unspent fuel

This is an expensive repair...catalytic coverters need replacing if everything else checks out on the car.  However, a loose oxygen sensor lead would make the car running rich
