It's going to depend on WHO does the work and labor cost's.
The sensor should be in the transmission(speed sensor) and it may be reached by removing the transmission pan.NORMALLY they are located on the valve body in the transmission.
Call a few GOOD shops for quotes on cost's.Might as well change the trans, fluid while your there too.

My fuel gauge and speedo dont work but i have noticed when i brake the fuel gage moves to full and when i take my foot of pedal it goes back to zero

Without knowing the year, make, and model, it it impossible to answer with any certainty, but...

I am fairly confident the speedo not working in unrelated to the gas gauge. Unless both gauges stopped working at exactly the same time, I would assume these to be separate issues and try to solve them individually.

For the gas gauge, you need to figure out where the fuel sensor is located. A lot of late-model cars are designed with this sensor inside the gas tank. If yours is in the tank, it may have come loose and be laying at the bottom of the tank. If so, the sloshing of the fuel due to the braking force may be causing the sensor to momentarily send an inaccurate reading. Unfortunately, it is expensive if you have to drop the tank.

For the speedometer, a lot depends on what kind of car you have. On older cars, the speedo cable could be disconnected/broken/kinked. This is easily fixed by simply replacing the cable. On newer cars, it could be a wiring or chip issue.

There is a (small) chance that both problems are related. If so, it is likely an electrical short of a loose wire. Check for any that may be hanging down near the brake pedal.

Good luck!

00 ford focus 1.4 estate speedo stops working and some times digital display looks like ----. all other guages work

your speedo works via the wheel speed sensors and/or the engine speed sensor and is processed via the ecu. facias are far more complicated than older models and do fail requiring specialist repair. To actually replace would require reprogramming in most cases.
I suggest you get your Focus scanned and see what dtc codes come up....speak to the technician and see if they make sense.
You may have abad wiring plug connector or something silly.
Dont too expensive.

I have been offered a W reg 1.4 polo which is in really good condition, but both speedo and rev dials etc have stopped working. I have been told that if the sensor goes into the gear box its a simple fix...

the speedo is controlled by the VSS sensor in the box and it is not all that expensive
The rev counter ( tacho) is controlled by the ECM as it get is impulses from the ignition control module
nothing to do with the ABS ( anti - brake skid)
unit which is connected to the brakes
transmission problems you take to an accredited auto transmission specialist

Hi, i have a 2005 bmw x5 and the speedo and fuel consumption gauge are not working. all other instruments are working. thanks

could just be the sensors so check them out with a automotive meter for feed to the tank gauge and then jack car up read for a low voltage output from the speed sensor and if they have power and appear to work then its a new speedo head --- ouch--- expensive

My Nissan Quest 2000 odometer and speedometer stopped working. The mechanic said that he thought it was due to a sensor and he has since replaced the sensor. He now says that the problem is still not fixed...

yes it does, this is why you have a written work order with the milage from your speedo and the milage from the replacement speedo on them with all other info for proof when selling or submitting info at secretary of state office for correct title odometer reading. Plus a lower milage speedo just makes you feel better don't it? WOW, 69,000 0n a 95? to bad its not under warranty. I just hate to spend money and not fix the problem. Ask mechanic to verify in writing that this fix will fix the problem and if not is he gonna fix with no further charges. Okay then put old sensor back in or use that money spent toward the real fix. You can't let someone just keep on guessing, you could spend $100.00 + and still not get a resolution. Just a temper.

Our speedo quit two days ago, is there a fuse or just speed senso

try replacing the speed sensor thats most likely your problem, its that or the speedo cluster which i doubt, its the sensor 90% of the time and it not expensive or hard to replace, hope this is helpful.

Speedo has suddenly stopped working also the mileometer has also stopped? please help

If you can hear it while your driving its the speedo and not the cable. Replace speedometer or whole gauge cluster.( What ever is easyer) You can find one on ebay. It could also be the speedo sensor on the top back half on the engine. REAL EXPENSIVE! Even for a used one. About $150 bucks for the sensor. And about the same for the Cluster.

Speedo inop

It sounds like you have a bad speedo sensor in the transmission. The sensor is usualy not all that expensive, and shouldn't be too hard to replace.
