Question about Hyundai Sonata

Engine runs rough after replacing heads.

I just put the heads back on a 2003 Hyundai Sonata 2.7 and it runs rough, spits and sputters. It will idle for a short time. But to keep it running I have to give it alot of pedal movement.Is there way to know the camshafts are in the proper position or is there something else wrong?

    Could the possibility of the crank shaft being 180 degrees out and the engine firing on the exhaust stroke? I think the crank and cam sensors need to be in sync to fire at the right time but not sure.

Check for vac leaks.

    You should be able to pull the upper timing belt cover to check cam timing if you aren't sure you got it right. If you can't find any vac leaks the best thing to do is double check your work. When I say check for vac leaks, use carb cleaner and spray the intake and see if the rpm's go up. Vehicles with Mass air flow sensor will run real bad with vac leaks.

    It couldn't be that far off, it wouldn't even run. If it is off it would only be 2, 3,or 4 teeth.

I do not believe the two are closely related but try disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it again. Only the negative side. also check for a loos connection.

It sounds like a vacuum problem is keeping the EGR valve open causing the other sensors to read this and more fuel would be injected by the ECM. u may of gotten an egr code but the problem is not the valve itself.

Check for insufficiant fuel pressure, or restricted exhaust.

Sounds like you have a plugged up catalytic converter. You cant clean them it will need replaced. If it is the 4cyl engine, the converter is the exhaust manifold on the front of the engine.

How do i replace the oxygen sensor on a 2003 hyundai sonata. The car runs fine for a while then it will sputter and the engine will die. I wait a minute, start it up and the car is fine for a while before...

did you pick up a fault code to explain your action as i dont believe the oxygen sensor is at might be that one of your other sensors is at fault.the 02 sensor only reads the emmition gasses but will not cut the engine.plse get the fault codes.
