How do i change a timing belt on a 2005 chrysler sebring 2.4L 4CYL DOHC

Timing belts are rather tricky to replace as they often require special tools to remove/tension the timing belt. Also, your car has an interference engine, meaning that if you make a mistake and accidentally move the cam/crankshaft relationship, you can damage the engine internally. Also, if the belt has broken or jumped time, simple replacement may not be adequate, as valve and/or piston damage may well have occurred. Since you are trying to do this yourself, you are obviously trying to do this "on the cheap". All well and good, but be advised that unless you want to do the job again in a few months, you should replace the water pump and the timing belt tensioner at the same time you replace the belt as they almost always fail shortly after belt replacement alone. You can get the step-by step procedures to do the job from the AUTOZONE website. You simple need to register an account to access the REPAIR HELP area. Once you select you car and engine (ensure VIN letter matches as there are two 2.4L DOHC engines that year), go to REPAIR HELP, then VEHICLE REPAIR GUIDES, THEN ENGINE MECHANICAL, THEN TIMING BELT. Read over the entire procedure area first,as they usually cover all engine types in the same procedure. That way you ensure you are only doing the steps pertinent to your vehicle.

2.4 liter, timing belt or timing chain?

Timing belt. This engine is an interference engine. Ensure the belt is replaced before it breaks to prevent internal engine damage. If replacing it as a DIY project, be sure to follow all procedures carefully as improper procedure can also result in valve or piston damage. If the belt has already broken, the odds are better than 90% that the cylinder head will need to be repaired or replaced and the pistons will need to be inspected for damage.

I was going to replace my timing belt for 2001 dodge neon r/t and the mechanic says I have to replace the water pump as well. Is this correct?

The water pump is driven by the timing belt. Do you have to replace it? No. Is it smart to do so as long as your already paying for most of the labor to replace the timing belt? Yes. Worst case scenario is you don't relace it and then 6 months later it starts leaking or the bearings go bad and you will have to spend the money to pull the timing belt agiain to replace the pump. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using!

Hi I have broken a drive belt on my Subaru Lancaster 3 litre (year 2000} I have the new belt but cannot see how to remove the engine cowling so as to relace the belt and make necessary adjustments. It...

You may need more than a belt replacement; the link below will show the characteristics of Subaru engines and the H-6 is listed as an 'interference' engine, meaning that when the timing belt breaks, it is possible for the pistons and valves to collide which can result in bent or broken valve stems and/or damaged pistons. In this case, it is wise to have a pro examine the engine and replace the belt.
It is also possible to damage this engine by improperly installing the new timing belt.
Some of the details may be at odds with your specific model but the mention of this engine being an interference engine is enough to give one pause-

Timing belt doesn't align and slips off spokets where it shreaded.

Usually there is a tensioner to to keep the timing belt in its place. When it is stretched too much then it need to be relaced. It seems like the belt need replaced. It is a simple task for someone knw what is supposed to do. Otherwise, putting back incorrrectly, the engine can't be started since the Top dead Center is not alligned for timeing sequences. Hope it helps.

A/c belt relacement

DO this with a COLD engine, so you do not burned by a hot engine...Loosen the 14 millimeter nut on the idler/tensioner pulleythat the AC belt rides on. Do NOT remove the nut, or the pulley will fall off. Then loosen the long 12 millimeter bolt, which will remove tension, and will let the pulley extend. Remove the old belt. Spin the tensioner pulley with your hand, make sure that it spins free & is not noisy, Fit the new belt, and tighten the 12 millimeter bolt until the pulley retracts, and tightens the belt. Finally, retighten the 14 millimeter nut.
