Often the door has to be pushed against a spring to close so when the release is pulled the door springs open a small distance
Designs that don't include a spring usually include a rubber buffer that must be compressed slightly to close the door. It isn't unusual for the rubber buffer to be left lying on a gas station forecourt though I have seen designs that include adjustable buffers that won't stay where they are adjusted to and need a spot of glue.
In the Ford Ranger, the light switch can be found in the door, right by the latch. You may need to use some WD-40 to get to work properly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- zed bull
Most likely sucked up some rust and crud from bottom of tank. Blocked fuel filter. Some possibility of pump being choked too.
Replace the fuel filter first, its under the car on the drivers side close to where the door hinges are. Basic wrenches will do it. Should be only a few dollars.

Take a CLOSE Look at this and Be sure This is Working Properly, My References Do NOT Go into DETAIL on this so its Kinda a Common SenseApproach to it.
I had the same issue with my 08 WRX I saw a metal tab came loose I put it back where i thought it went on the inside door of the gas tank. I only have 5000 miles on my WRX and I am experiencing this for the first time.
