Just bought it and silly me never tried to open the back hatch. it gets stuck on both sides, makes loud popping sound when it gives. once open there is no problem keeping it open or closing it. i think it has to do with the hydrolics getting stuck but im not sure. any ideas?

You can't. You have to get the hatch open. Pull the top trim off the hatch. Remove two screws , one on each side. Pull the bottom panel out and reach down and grab the rod or arm to open the hatch. Then you can access the screws to remove the rear lens. Fix the hatch since it is open.
Rear open hatch. Remove 2 retaining pop fasteners, turn taillight towards outside of van. Don't break hook(tab) on the light assembly. Squeeze the tab on bulb pull bulb straight out. Check hook grommet on van. Replace if cracked can cause water leak on van
Lock &/or linkages probably seized. Try pushing in & out & using key to get it open, or keep trying button. When you do get it, You'll need to get lots of spray (penetrating) in & around those mechanisms. I took back cover off mine to get at it good. Let me know if you can finally at least get it open one way or another to get spray on that latch, and we'll go from there.
i had the same problem and it's almost impossible to open it with out being able to "open it" I had to bend out the back material on the hatch reach my hands in and dig around with my fingers untill i found the 'trigger" to open the hatch it took a long long time, I then could open the hatch and the bottom as well and ther on the side of the hatch it the screws to get to the "trigger" to open the hatch?????? I then put together the broken parts and now it work (with the help of some wire). It hurt my hand but didn't cost me anything to fix but my time and some wire, not sure if yours is the same problem but if you can hear the mechanics work when you push the hatch to open try it
open the rear door completly if it wont stay open prop something under it like a 2x4 piece of wood or something. Unscrew the bolts and remove the the hatch supports. Replace them with new ones and your good to go. They might take a special hex head screw driver but you can pick that up at any auto parts store
I had the same problem. A weather mat got stuck when the hatch closed. After freeing the mat, the hatch would not open. The lock button would go up and down, but the hatch stayed locked.
What happened was the the plastic holder for the metal arm that connected the lock button to the mechanism broke.
There are no screws holding the inside panel, just metal tab clips.
First, I took off the inside close handle--2 bolts. Then I had to work my way from the center tail light, unscrewing it and popping off the left and right trim pieces--metal tab clips. These were covering the back panel. Now the hard part was getting the back panel off. It does pop off and I found it very hard to get something behind the edges.
The plastic holder that held the metal connector in place had broke. I used two plastic pull ties to hold the connector in it's place. Reversed the procedure and it works again.
