Question about 1996 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup

1 Answer

4 wheel drive doesn't work now

I have a 1996 s-10 pick up (automatic) 4.3 liter and I noticed with the
last couple of snow storms that it didn't seem to be working in 4hi or 4 low. When I push the buttons I hear the solinoid engage but not
more traction. I put it up on jack stands and the front drive line turns
but the front wheels don't. Where do I start? Could it be the transfer
case or the front differential?

The vacuum actuator that locks in the front differential is not working, It is either bad or has no vac to it. It is controlled by a vac switch in the top of the transfer case. check the vac supply to the switch and the actuator.

Have the tyres inspected for side bulges and tread separation . Worn tyres loose the ability to remain in balance due to the loss of rubber and the steel belt is impacted by road objects and tend to break easily.

2002ford explorer sport, the 4 wheel drive high or low

The transfer case may be hanging up, have you ever had it serviced with new fluid? If not do so and drive it for a few miles and try again, if that doesn't fix the issue you will need a shop to inspect the transfer case actuator motor and position contacts.

Why would or how would a vehicle know it was snowing,
and needed 4 wheel turned on?

Of coarse you have to select a button to turn it on or off

That said, it may not be working correctly, which is what your
parents told you!!

4 wheel drive engages itself after rain or snow

I had that problem last year. Dodge fixed it for $500.00 it was the "Transfer Case Motor". Rock Auto Online http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php has them for $140.00. 3 bolts, two plugs, 15mins. and your done. Wish I had known it would have saved me $360.00.

Hi there , in order for your 4 wheel to work you have to drive a couple feet for everything to lock. If you are already stuck and you put it into 4 wheel, it won't engage. hope this helps you out
