The whole gear shift lever turns

There are several causes for harsh shifting. If you have a vacuum modulator on the right side of the transmission make sure it isn't leaking. (see if any trans fluid is inside by turning it so the nipple for the vacuum hose is pointed down and tap on it) You can also have a broken accumulator spring...some are accessed from outside the case, some are not. An improperly adjusted "kickdown" cable can also cause this. Anything else is internal and would be related to a sticking valve in valve body or pressure loss at an internal shaft seal. You will need a manual for a breakdown of your specific unit to locate these items.

your transmission has possibly been rebuilt with stronger springs put in. No worries. have been running mine for along while without any problems. Better this than slipping, but it is a bit annoying.

Either the pin that connects rod to tranny is broken off, or there is internal transmission problems.
