this could be so many issues. If you havent changed the timing belt or have over 70K on it i would take off the timing belt inspecting cover and make a little mark on timing belt with a paint pen or similar and have someone try to crank it for 1 second and see if the mark moves. if it doesnt move it is a bad timing belt if it does move i would check the actual timing marks on crankshaft and actual cam sprocket and make sure that all timings are good.

if they are off then that means that there might be teeth missing on the belt and slips once in awhile making your vavle timing go off. this is just one area to look at. any check engine lights on????

I just put a new fuel pump in a 97 sportage with the same problems but now it starts and idles just fine but as soon is itry to give it some gas it stalls out and starts backfiring through the intake,i put new plugs and wires on after that started up better but still same problem, me thinks its the kickdown cable for the transmission is causing it because the gas pedal is tight but the kickdown cable hooked up to the throttle body is stuck out so i think the transmission is sensing wideopen throttle therefore its advancing the timing way too much and causing it to stall, or it could just need a new timing belt, but i took a peek at it and saw my camshift timing marks were in the right spot and lined up together however, i dint see the crankshaft timing mark so i dont know yet but once i fgure it out i will def let you know because its been in my bay for 3 days now and its pissing me off hope this helps a little

I had the same issue. I replaced the camshaft position sensor. this corrected the problem on my 98 sportage.

If it was me i would make sure the battery is fully charge and that the alternator and the drive belt is good and i would also check the timing as well.

2001 kia sportage hard to crank when it does it smell like it's flooded after a bit it may cut off could it be the tempture sensor

When u smell the fuel, that means its not burning via spark plugs. It sounds like u may be losing spark for some reason. If it ONLY happens cold or ONLY the sensor may be involved. Sounds like a spark loss. Good luck

Cyl #1 misfire chk engine light

Two additional possibilities:
  • Fuel contamination (worth siphoning and replacing ALL of the fuel to eliminate the possibility, especially if you have been using ethanol blend fuel);
  • Bad spark plug wire (despite proper static resistance). Just replace ALL of the spark plug wires.

How to fix a code P0304

The P0304 code means that the cylinder 4 is misfiring or is randomly misfiring. Start by checking for intake leaks an if no leaks are found the next step is to replace the spark plugs on cylinder 4. If the problem persist more tests needs to be done to diagnose problem, see "Possible Causes"

- Faulty spark plug 4
- Clogged or faulty fuel injector 4
- Faulty ignition coil 4
- Fuel injector 4 harness is open or shorted
- Fuel injector 4 circuit poor electrical connection
- Ignition coil 4 harness is open or shorted
- Ignition coil 4 circuit poor electrical connection
- Insufficient cylinder 4 compression
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Intake air leak
most likely change your spark plugs these should be done every 60,000 km

2000 kia sportage. no start no spark no injector pulse.

check both of your fuse panels for a blown fuse. there's 4-5 that control the fuel pump, engine sensors, fuel injectors and such. one of those may be blown and not letting the rest of the system function. one panel is located under hood, and one is under the dash on drivers side. when you take the covers off they have the fuses numbered and tell what they control.
