Under the car... might be accessable from above too... look where the motor joins the transmission...it will be there... if it's a front wheel drive it's at the front of the motor... rear wheel drive it could be on either side of the motor

almost forgot... when you do the hammer thing to the starter... you need someone else to turn the key as tho you were starting it... and if it starts that way... install a replacement starter before it leaves you stranded (again)

2005 honda civic replaced starter .it started right up for a couple of days now just cranks and won't start?

Tapping the starter is just a test, then you replace it as you did

So the starter issue is resolved

No check to see if you have fuel pressure at the motor
when you cycle the key

Also check for spark or injector pulse when cranking

If you have a relay for starter switch it with a similar one

My starter...can I tap it to start?

If you are trying to start the car, and the starter solenoid is hanging up, tapping on it sometimes frees it up enough to engage the starter motor to turn over the engine. This is a two person operation - one to turn the key, the other to tap on the starter/starter solenoid. The problem will only get worse - eventually, the solenoid or starter will fail completely. Best bet is to schedule a time to get it fixed instead of waiting for it to fail completely, likely at a bad time for you.

Will not start-will not click or crank -security light comes on

Start with the battery. Pull headlight switch on and get out and look at headlight. If the headlight is strong enough that you can hardly look at it then the battery is OK.

Turn something on in the car that only works with the ignition turned on to confirm that the ignition switch is OK.

Next if you can find the starter check for loose connections.

If there are no loose connections the last chance is to lightly tap on the starter/solenoid with a small hammer while having someone trying to start the car. This is old school stuff.

Warning . Be very careful if you are under a car tapping on a starter while someone is starting this vehicle. Block wheels . Use jack stands if neccesary. Make sure person is qualified that is turning the key.

Tapping on the starter is a stuck in the bush kind of procedure. If this fails you likely need a new starter/solenoid.
Good luck

My starter has failed what should i do i was told to knock on it will this work

if tapping on the starter while someone tries to start it and it starts then you will have to replace the starter to fix the problem.

Replaced battery and now car will not start

Did your Bonne start OK but slow before battery swap? Does the motor not turn over at all? Can you jump start the new battery? If your 3800 V-6 is not turning over now...try tapping the starter with a hammer then try to start...for this scenario...the starter needs replaced...not a bad job on you Bonneville...:)

Installing a starter for a 1998 bonneville...Have replaced battery and starter but when starter engages gets jammed on fly wheel and doesnt turn. Shimmed and still doesnt turn

first check to see if motor will turn over put socket on bolt on crankshaft pulley if motor doesn't turn over u have a seized motor
if it does turn over than i remove tranny and check to make sure flywheel is bent or cracked

2002 pontiac bonneville doesn't start. Battery is good and starter is fine but starter doesn't ry to start. No click or anything. Is there a schematic I can look at to trace and find the problem

Look into the neutral safety switch. To test: Foot on break; key in start position and hold it there; shift trans slowly through the neutral range...if you get action, adjust or replace neutral safety switch.

Starter

see if you can trace the red battery cable to the starter.
if you find it only tap on it with someone else hold the key on for you.
cause beating it up and then turning the key will not work.
also do not hit it that hard as you will break the mags in side.

When I try starting my 2000 Jeep Wrangler I hear a clicking noise but that is all. I was told to tap on the starter solenoid while turning the key but I don't know where the solenoid is located. Can yo...

the starter solenoid is on top of the starter, the starter is on the bottom rear of engine, the problem u are discribing is a defective starter solenoid, with this type of starter I doubt that tapping on it will make the truck start, u will need to replace the starter solenoid.

1995 Bonneville will not start. Battery is working, however car will not turn over. I do not belive it is the starter and was told it was the motor. Is this the same as engine and how much will this cost,...

You don't want it to be the motor/engine. Be sure the battery is good. Then go to the starter. IF it has been a very long time since it was started the starter may be a problem. After the starter is ruled out then and only then do you consider the motor. Hope it helps.
