I have an '05 Malibu that makes an annoying rattling sound at about 40 mph. It sounds like its coming from the dashboard somewhere possibly under the ac vent.

Have someone ride with you to try and clarify just what side it may be coming from. Sometimes noises from under the hood can be misleading and sound like it's inside with you. Check it out. Rattles can sometimes be a nightmare

Try the cupholder on the drivers side. Then, if it's like the issue I had, push the plastic around the dimmerswitch wheel in toward the rest of the dashboard. THAT'S where the rattle was for my car. Also a 40mph and above issue. If that doesn't do it, try putting pressure on different parts of the dash to eliminate the fitting together of the molded plastic as the issue. Other then that, I'd have to be there to see what it could be!

I have a 2005 Colorado that has developed a rattle coming from the middle of the dash board when I reach speeds of 50 mph or greater. I believe it may be an air vent door slaping as air flow through the system. Any thoughts on the source or how to repair it?

Sounds like a bad wheel bearing to me. Try slightly turning to the left than to the right when the noise begins. If it changes pitch, than it is most probably a bad wheel bearing.
