what about the crankshaft position sensor, an intermittent signal from the sensor could cause this symptom.

A common problem with these engines is a leaky intake gasket which sucks in outside air spray carb cleaner around intake base see if engine idle increases .most likely this is your problem

Its am ECM problem. I had one of these model with v-6 and had to replace it. Same symptoms. Check after market availibility and maybe consider performace module for same price for more HP.

92 Doge Dakota Sport w/3.9 2 door extended cab 5 speed. Truck is sputtering and back firing. was doing the sputtering at 40 to 45mph. then ck engine light came on when checked no code. has OBD1 system....

If it idle fine and stumbles on acceleration your are looking at a spark grounding out, If it cant idle starts then dies your MAP sensor has problems,

1992 dodge dakota starting problem

The first thing you need is to have the unit scanned. Check things like the baro sensor, map sensor, coolant temp. and the TP sensor. Also check your fuel pressure, volume and injector spray pattern. I think you will have found your problem, but if not hit me back with engine size and any codes,Good Luck.
