The whole trip to store, back & R&R motor will take
no more than couple hours

You will see the wire connectors, motor in plain site

Where is the transfer case shift motor located on 2004 dodge dakota

The transmission control module and the transfer case control module are separate parts. The transmission control module is mounted under the hood and controls only transmission functions. The transfer case control module controls only the transfer case, and is located inside the truck. If you remove the trim panel under the steering column you will find the transfer case control module mounted just to the right of the opening.

The shift motor is located just behind the axle tube to prevent damage.
There is a shift motor on the right front axle that is vacuum operated.
The shift motor (1) is an electromechanical device consisting of a DC permanent magnet motor, a motor brake, a gear train and an analog position sensor. The shift motors' overall function is to move and lock a gear that moves the mode fork found in the transfer case. This allows the transfer case to be shifted electrically to multiple operating positions (4LOCK and AWD). The operating current of the shift motor under
stall conditions is 30 amps maximum at 72° F with 13.5 volts, at the motor leads.
OPERATION
Shifting in the transfer case occurs when the shift motor brake is released and a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) voltage is supplied to the shift motor by the Front Control Module (FCM). A linear analog position sensor located inside the shift motor, provides the FCM with the motors' angular, rotational position. With this information, the FCM
continuously knows the motors' position, and therefore allows it to accurately control the motors' operation, including voltage polarity which is used to control motor direction.

REMOVAL :---Note: New shift motor assemblies are shipped in the AWD position. If a new shift motor assembly must be installed, it will be necessary to shift the transfer case to the AWD position prior to motor installation.
Raise the vehicle on a suitable hoist.Remove the front propeller shaft. Disengage the wiring connectors from the shift motor and mode sensor.Remove the front output shaft companion flange from the transfer case.Remove the bolts (Remove the Shift Motor and Mode Sensor Assembly Bolts) holding the shift motor and mode sensor assembly onto the transfer case.Separate the shift motor and mode sensor assembly from the transfer case. See fig below:-- helpmech_19.gif

2000 chevy blazer stuck in 4 wheel low is it the motor on the transfer case (on side or is it in the transfer case)

The motor is on the transfer case on the drivers side..it looks like a sparkplug type of thing and has a 3-4 pin plug...they cost about 30 bucks and are very easy to change...there are some other posts in here that mention the actuator for this motor and it is under the battery...you may want to read up on this too, as this may be the problem also

95 full size bronco transfer case 4x4 shift motor froze put new one in now it wont shift right

My brother has a 94 Bronco, we had the same problem upon installation of the new transfer case motor. In our case, all we did was liberally coat all moving parts of the transfer case motor with grease.

Transfer case problem and average replacement cost?

You can remove the transfer case ,strip it down and reassemble it,making any parts swaps, you may need. I owned a trans shop and would never install someone elses unit in mine. Repair yours, only if necessary. I would check out everything, I could, for as long as it takes, before I would pull it. Not much but a stretched chain would cause a noise. I will guarrantee you ,you will be given a used unit, with absolutely now internal inspection at all. Just a heads up,remember what I'am telling you,so you don't get bit,

When installing a encoder motor do I need to shift the transfer case into neutral? Or does the shaft on the transfer case have to line up with the motor?

The shaft is a one way fit. You don't have to shift to neutral but you might have to turn the shaft coming out of the transfer case to line it up. New motors usually come in the 2 hi position.

Probably bad encoder motor on transfer case. Also, make sure GM Auto-TracII "blue" fluid only is in the transfer case. Many encoder motor get stuck in engaged position when they fail. Try "thepartsladi" store on eBay for lowest cost OEM motor, BEWARE AFTERMARKET!

Oil leak where half shaft enters transfer case on passenger side.

Same propblem. My dealer repaired twice, cost lots of dollars cause they say they have to remove the case. After the second repair and still leaks, they say the manufacture says to replace the transfer case??? $3400 for the job. Tomcal, if you are still checking, did you get it fixed and did you do it yourself? Good luck to anyone else with this problem. I love the car, a 2001 with less than 100K.

Average Shop Labor Guide = 10.5 hrs @ (ask the shop how much their shoprate is) example : if it is $80 per hour - then $840 labor.

INCLUDES R & R OF COMPLETE ENGINE ASSEMBLY. TRANSFER OF ALLNECESSARY PARTS. NOTE *** DOES NOT INCLUDE GASKET REPLACEMENT ***

if you require any new parts - spark plugs , fluids , possible a/cfreon , hoses , sensors , gaskets , unforseen broken parts , servicessuch as diagnostics after the install , ect., price goes up .

get written estimates from multiple shops , compare prices , go with who you trust . remember this when you vote ,i'm not the bad guy , just researching and relaying honest information . cheers
