Question about 1996 Nissan Quest

2 Answers

I would like to know the posible causes of engine running hot.

My Nisan !Quest 1996 started running hot and yet it had a new radiator and fan. I bought the radiator and fan from the dealers and they have been operating fine for four months. Could there be another reason for engine overheating? Do you think the low level of lubricating oil could cause this problem?

Hi emissionwiz, four months ago, I payed a repair shop money for new radiator, thermostat and gave them a brand new fan from a dealer. So the thermostat is as good as new.

Yes the engine had been overheating before repair. However in this first case the fan was faulty and wasn't operating at all. In addition to this, the radiator had a slow leak. I have not checked for the bubbles. I will check for the bubbles today.

It appears that most of the oil in your car's lubrication system may have leaked out leading to engine being forced to run without lubricant. This is likely to damage the cylinder sleeves and rings. The crank shaft and any nother parts that mesh within the engine are likely to be damaged. Have you tried to replace the filter and refil the system with lubricant again? If you do this and it does not start then most likely your engine (motor) is history (damaged).

Was the engine overheating before this repair? and again do u have bubbles in the coolant tank when the engine is running?, this is best checked when the engine is 1st started. I ask because I think u may have a leaking cylinder head gasket, this would account for the overheating still occurring.

Hi Big Mike, Have you checked the timing? If you have a petrol engine it could be ignition or valve timing which has gone out. A stretched chain could do it. Like wise for diesel. If the pump has been ******** too much it will heat more at higher speeds. The overheating can also be caused by a cracked cylinder head. The symptoms are those which you've described! Regards John

One thing you could do is start the car with the hood up watch the temp gauge and when it starts getting hot watch to see if the fan comes on if not it could be the fan motor or a fan switch . Hope this helps

I had a new radiator installed and now the car is running hot. What would cause the car to run hot?

Check when cold that the coolant level is full in the radiator. Check it at the radiator not just at the orerflow tank. There may have been air locks in the engine - heater or hoses when the radiator was fitted . Also check that if it has an electric fan that the sender plug has been re attached to the sender switch on the radiator and that the fan is operating when the engine hot. The fan should come on for a minute or so then turn off until the sender switch turns it on again.

1996 sunfire overheating replaced thermostat, waterpump and heater core. Fan is working after cleaning relay. Still overheating ?

Does the top rubber engine to radiator hoes get hot? If yes then the new thermostat is working. Does the bottom return hose from the radiator back to the engine also get hot? If yes then the pump is OK. If not then there is a blockage in the system and this will need to be flushed out from both the radiator and the engine block using a high pressure hose. Does the radiator fan come on promptly. It should start before the bottom return hose becomes hot. If not then the temperature sensor (different from the temperature sender to the dash display) maybe at fault. Your relay maybe fine but it is the sensor that actually triggers the fan to come on. It may be just bad connection so try wiggling the wires to it when the engine has got warm. The temperature sensor is also important to let the engine computer management system (ECU)know that the engine has reached operating temperature. A failed sensor not only allows overheating but means that the ECU thinks the engine is still cold and runs the engine on a rich mix. Have you noticed lumpy idling when hot and excessive fuel consumption recently? these are symptomatic of a failing sensor.

1997 nissan quest is running hot. changed the thermostat. but it will start lurching once it starts running hot.

Many things can cause this but check the radiator. It could need cleaned as in rodded out. Could be a blown head gasket or timing could be slightly off just enough to overheat it.

1996 nissan altima running hot changed thermostat new radiator you can drive it an hour before it runs hot

check the operation of the fans, since the radiator was recently replaced, it is posible they may not be plugged in correctly or operating like they should, if they look good, look into the water pump, with the work that u already did the only this left to look at after the water pump is the intake or head gasket, any water in oil or vice versa? look into that if all else fails....

Also could be cooling fans. Did you notice if your fans are working when it is hot? Could be bad fan relay which would keep your fans from turning.

Nissan Quest 96 Engine running hot

In the fuse/relay box under the hood in front of the battery are 3 fan relays. 1 for low speed, and 2 for high speed. 1 of high speed is back up. check the relays first.
B3 CHECK FUSES
  • Key OFF.
  • Check the 10A RELAYS fuse located in the interior fuse junction panel and the 65A RAD FAN fuse located in the main fuse junction panel. (engine compartment)
pLease rate as fixya if this helps. good luck
