now here is where i get confused took cap off the end off the fuel rail to try and gauge the fuel flow connected hose to end and ran to a fuel can turned the engine over to get the fuel pumping and low and behold the engine fired up but would only tick over as soon as the throttle is presseed the engine died, replaced the fuel rail cap and the car will not start.

If the fuel pressure regulator is stuck there will be to much pressure to the injectors and the injectors won't open, and thus no start. Since you relived the pressure by lossening the cap the engine ran.

Cranks over. But wont start.

Pull the injectors and have them tested for electronic continuity and spray pattern as the needle may be rusted up or the coils in the injectors corroded away for the long period of no use. Regardless of what engine you have if you have spark at the correct time --compression --fuel then you must have go in the engine . Continuing to run will depend on the make and design as the other variables come into play.

86 porsche 944, starts n runs, while driving at higher rpms, car cuts right off, i start it back up n it runs funky, now last time it did it i pulled dme relay, and puty it right back in and the car ran...

I would buy a used one if you can (dme chip). Have you cleaned the fuel injectors? one could be faulty and could be a coincidence about the car working better after taking the relay out and putting back in. could be a bad cpu also. would love to hear what happened if you get it fixed. good luck

Porsche 944 late ?85 early ?86 Please help if you can. The car is my only one, at the moment, and I need to get it running fast. The car has never given me any trouble, though it has only done 3K miles in...

ok, your problem is your fuel. your carborator cannot sit that long with fuel in it. try getting a can of carb cleaner and spray it while its running, or have a mechanich clean it if you don't know how.

Engine dies after a time

it is the dme relay. it has a bad connection. very common problem. you can test this by making a jumper cable from the numbered position on the relay. make a y cable with each end having a male connection. plug each end into the slots numbered 30 78 78b. but this will drain the battery if left as a long term fix.

944 cuts off after 5 min.

Sounds like fuel relay located in fuse/relay box. This is a common problem on the 944, always good idea to carry a spare.
