Question about 1997 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

My rear back brakes on my 1997 pontiac sunfire have been making a scraping noise for the past month. When I took the car in to have an allignment in a heated garage for over a hour on my way home they just stoped making the scrapping noise. The Mechanic said these cars are known to have ice built up on rear drum so it sounds like it is the brakes gone on rear But is not Is it Ice Build up?

When applied, brakes generate lots of heat... If noise was there after dirving for a while, likely the noise is not from ice. If noise is gone, wait and see if it returns, If it does, check rear brake linings to make sure they are OK (never hurts to check them once in a while anyhow!!!)

When appling brakes rear end of car makes noise and seems to pull rear end down

Your rear brakes need to be addressed, it could be proportionate valve at your master cylinder or your brake shoe are in to tight from a missed adjusted parking brake cable.
Good luck and hope it's a simple parking brake cable adjustment or brake shoe replacement. Note that a worn out brake shoe will cause this also and you may have to replace the brake drums if it's also past it's wear marks.
Thank you for using Fixya

I have had this experience myself. If the lamp is good try scraping the contacts inside the recepticle and raise the prongs on the lamp to make tighter contact. It worked for me.

I own a 1997 pontiac sunfire back right tire locking.

It seems that the backing plates are dirty and not allowing the brake shoe to return to it's proper position, rust builds up while not in use and causes the wheel to lock

check if this car has load proportioning valves fitted for the rear brakes and working correctly if it is a rear brake slide.if not check A B S sensors and the A B S control unit.if the A B S light comes on when moving it is a sensor problem.if its on with engine on with car stationeryits almost likely to be A B S unit
