Check engine light came on. Is this a death sentence?

Thx. It came on about 3-4 yrs ago and apparently they just had to flush the transmission fluid and it was fixed. I do not feel anything different with the way it drives and the transmission is still smooth as can be. Could it still be a major trans problem?

Thanks again. I took the jeep in over the weekend and they said the code referenced a "1-2 Shift Malfunction" however they couldn't find anything wrong w/ the car and mentioned that it may be a fluke thing. So, they reset the light and I picked it up. 3 days later (yesterday) the light came back on. How bad is this? The car drives fine and the only thing I can think of is that lately its been feeezing out and in the morning it revs a bit higher than normal before shifting to 2nd. Other than that the car is operating nornally. When its not cold out, it shifts fine. Any ideas? The last time I had a light come on (3.5 yrs ago) was a 3-4 Shift malfunction.

Not necessarily but there are several hundred reasons for the light to illuminate. The fault code should be read to find out what the problem is as soon as possible.

The transmission fluid and filter being dirty can indeed cause sufficient restrictions to generate a fault code and cleaning it could indeed repair the situation without permanent damage. The reason I can only state that it COULD repair the situation would depend a lot on how soon the vehicle was serviced after the light came on.
