Question about 1996 Dodge Intrepid

Tranny slips & no overdrive

I wanted to know if anyone could tell me the difficulty of putting a new tranny in my 1996 intrepid? I have put tranny's in before, but a shop told me i could not do it myself from the ground and the computer had to be linked with the car or something like that? does anyone know if this is true?

Vehicle needs to be up in the air. Exhaust, trans cross mount support, bellhousing bolts, all wire connectors, shift cable, cooler lines, both axle shafts, torque converter bolts, all have to be removed. As far as a computer link up goes, you will need to do a quick learn & a clutch volume index (CVI) reset. A dealer can do that after the new trans is in. Good Luck.

Take it back to who ever did the work. It's possible they forgot to hook something up or tighten something, or did something wrong. There is no way anyone can tell you if it can be fixed if you don't know the problem.

My 1990 Town Car auto tranny slips in overdrive

There are both bands and clutches in your transmission and likely you have an internal pressure loss that is affecting overdrive. Repair cost i can't give you but being as old as it is likely you can get an identical vehicle for what it will cost to repair. You may be able to prolong the inevitable by using a conditioner such as lucas,(only one I've seen that actually does help in some cases) but it can't fix what is worn, so even if it works better, it will only be temporary. I know that isn't exactly what you wanted to hear but that's the way it is.

Overdrive going out

well not having overdrive has nothing to do with the motor you are having transmisson trouble and the first thing you need to do is get the tranni serviced flushed new filter and put a quart of lucas tranni treatment in i have seen that stuff stop tranni slip it worked in the 1999 envoy i have right now and do not floor it any more that will send your tranni to a early grave

Auto transmission slips then grabs

first thing i would try is changing the transmission fluid out and filter, i beleive its almost 8 quarts. use a full quart of lucas transmission additive with the new fluid. if this doesn't help, the transmission will either need replaced or rebuilt

I assume you've checked the tranny fluid level? If so check the vacuum lines on the tranny, I had one come off and it would not shift properly.
