Ancient Mercedes 300SE jerky auto shift. What's wrong?

Bought car used five years ago. Ran well until after oil filter change; developed unresolved auto shift problem since then.

Sometimes won't shift afterall.

After last visit to mechanic, change is severely jerky and too rapid.

Sometimes car screeches almost to a halt.

What solutions?

Is it possible someone drained a little transmission fluid by mistake? My '88 300se started shifting rough the other day--added a little transmission fluid (approximately one pint) and shift is ok (back to normal) now.

Wrong transmission fluid type is an obvious solution, also look at the pressure control solenoid. check the filter is installed correctly.

good luck !

Go into auto factor and ask for filters they will know what you need ,as for oil then use cheapest diesel /petrol oil you can buy 10/40 20/50 natural or synthetic it doesnt matter which but change it every 6000 m and oil filter every third oil change and you will not go wrong .Dont forget the antifreeze either -all year round leave it in as its to stop corrosion .

The car is sputtering at high rpm

Hello, I would change the fuel filter especially if it's never been changed to your knowledge and if the car runs great up untill 4200rpms. If the filter is starting to plug then it will fell boggy and possibly jerky because the motor is being starved for fuel.
