Question about 1997 Chevrolet Blazer

Transmission issue, when in reverse heard a clunk, then a whining sound....later there was no reverse...2001 chevy blazer tried to back up and no such luck thought was the snow.put in four wheel drive still no luck. left parked til next day same thing no reverse...also hear as if taking longer to shift gears when taking off from a stop louder until bout 22-25 mph then quiets down again...everything else seems fine

2002 Chevy SC1 1500. 64,000 miles. Went to put in reverse, engine made a clunk sound and then whined. Now reverse will not work but just whines when put in that gear. Drive works normally. Any ideas?


Are you sure you have all the forward gears?(4speeds ,three shifts)This is a common problem with this transmission and it is almost always a broken reaction shell.The shell brakes due to a diagnostic code setting and putting the trans into a high pressure setting and braking the shell.It is possible that you have a problem n the reverse input clutches but this is rare.Eithe rway the transmission will need to be removed and diasssembled.Good luck and let me know if I can help.

My 2001 chevy blazer v6 auto transmission broke this morning. First i heard a sound like a band snapped and it started slipping, then it happened 2 more times. Now it sounds like it goes from 1st to drive....


Normally,the dipstick is between the engine and the firewall in back and labeled Trans or transmission fluid.However,some makes and models have been made so that the only way to check it is by a dealer or a shop.Why,I have no idea.That is the birdbrain decision someone made who obviously isn't consumer friendly,at least in my opinion.If you do find the dipstick,the proper way to check it is to let the engine warm up to operating temperature,car on a flat,level surface,pull out the dipstick and wipe it off.Don't bother reading the first dip.Dip maybe 3-5 times to ensure accuracy.I always do with an automatic anyhow because it is very expensixe to fix and you want to make sure it's good.Ever since I blew a transmission and found out the difference in repair prices,I switched to manual transmissions.It does sound like something within the transmission anyhow.If it is unrepairable and needs rebuilding or replacing,go with replacing.It may be a few hundred dollars more but I have heard many issues about the durability of rebuilt ones.With a new one,although the warranty is usually pretty limited(1-2 years),it is there,whereas a rebuilt one does not have anything,perhaps 30 days at most,if anything.Good luck! I have a 2001 chevy blazer, and when I go in reverse sometimes I will hear clunking sound and once in a great while when I break.


itis your universl joint in the rear i had mine fix and it went away on my chev jimmy 1995 model

The loss of 2nd 4th and reverse is a common failure on the 4L60E. What happens is the reaction shell has separated from the sun gear. Often a whole transmission is cheaper simply because the remanufactured unit from GM are reasonably priced and the warranty is 3yr 100,000 miles.

It is inside the transmission. It is called a reaction sun shell, it strips out, which causes the grind noise your talking about.

ok my truck done the same thing put it in reverse then to drive to check my universal joint and heard a pop and then i lost 2nd, 4th, and reverse all at one time it ended up being the sun-shell gear in the tranny cost me almost 500 to fix hope this helps out

Transmission - no reverse


i had to put a new trans in my 2000 jimmy about a year ago there is something inside called a "reverse hub" its made from aluminum and not very hard to break..when mine broke i was stuck trying to move in reverse and it heard a pop then a winding down noise and sure enough its the reverse hub to fix it i just had the trans rebuilt
