Have a 2004 jeep grand cherokee and when i push on the gas peddle it makes a knocking noise and the heater seems to have gone out at the same time

Heater 'gone out' = low coolant. Knocking noise = internal engine damage? Maybe low coolant = internal engine damage.

Likely you need more than one (not rod, but rod bearings) In most cases you get knocking noise and low oil pressure as symptoms. If caught early you can do this in-car otherwise engine needs crankshaft and all bearings as well as new pump and system flush.

Knocking noise is generally from the engine. What is your oil pressure? If pressure is low and oil is reasonably full, refrain from driving it till the cause is determined. Noise can also come from the transmission or transfer case but more likely it's from the engine. It can come from sticking valve lifters (moderately bad to potentially serious) connecting rod or main crank bearings (always serious) or piston slap (annoying, expensive but not terribly serious unless very bad) Piston wristpins can also knock but are very rare in todays pistons. Either way, this is not an item to ignore.

Audible knocking in rear of 1993 jeep grand cherokee laredo with 150,800 miles knocking only occurs when accelerator is not pressed

Sounds as If You Have A Chipped Tooth On the "RING GEAR" in the Differential (Rear Alex).
Is this Where You Hear The Noise Coming from? If So Remove Diff Cover With One Wheel OFF The Ground Trans In Neutral Rotate Drive Shaft and Look Closely For ANY Abnormal Surface on EACH Tooth of RING GEAR= the Large one And The "PINION GEAR" the Small one. If you find Chip or Rough spot Diff Must Be Rebuilt. Beyond that A Pinion Bearing can Also Make A Knocking Noise But the "GEARS" Will Be a Rhythmic Noise. I Hope this is of Some Help To You Good Luck !!

If you have a connecting rod problem, likely it is not the rod itself that has failed, rather, the crankshaft bearing on that rod or the wristpin. Usually though when either has failed, the knocking is an all the time thing, varying with engine rpm. A good tech can usually tell the difference between the two just by listening. A beraing failure is generally also accompanied by a drop in engine oil pressure as well. not so for a wristpin. An intermittent noise (tapping) can also indicate a valve lifter problem... though a lifter can also make noise during a low oil pressure situation. Lifter noise is heard from the top of the engine, both other noises are from underneath.
I would first have a different shop give you a second opinion. If it turns out to be a rod bearing, generally this damages the crankshaft and also sends bearing material throughout the entire engine. To properly repair would require complete teardown and rebuild, or replacement of engine. This does not hold true for lifter or wristpin problems, unless severe, though either can be expensive, even if you do the job yourself..
How long is your powertrain warranty?
Definitely get a second opinion before doing anything else!

Knocking noise

Check your tie rods and the drag link bar which controls the steering. Have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth while you are underneath and you should be able to pinpoint the noise location.   I had the same problem on my 2001.  Replaced the lower tie-rod ends and also the ones on both sides of the drag link. This solved the problem.  Whether you do this job yourself or not, you will definately also need an alignment upon completion.
