Cnbarr, Although it is possible, it is not probable. Of course NEW only means "Nerver Even Worked". That being said, you might want to go to your local parts house and take a look at another water pump and see if the impeller is facing or looks the same. If it is, yours is probably OK.

In the book a 96 model only fits 96-98 cars.
But the actual pump may be the same. You get an assembly including float and lines when you buy a new part.
You may be able to look at a new assembly for each year and tell if the actual pumps are the same style.
Are you talking about a boat motor??????? If so without knowing what kind of motor (Merc-Johnson- Martin??) you may have had mud wasps make their homes in the system over the time it sets in the spring. Or you didn't install the water pump properly. You did replace the pump?
