Interior Smell, musty mold smell

Interior of vehicle has a strong musty mold smell when it has been sitting for several hours or longer. Not as strong when vehicle is moving, but strongest when first getting into vehicle. I have looked around in other sites and it appears to be a fairly common problem. Been to the dealer once, no help. Trying again next week.

I have read about this problem, some say it comes from rain coming in throught the back hatch and running down into the spare tire well, it sits there and causes bad odours.

Musty Smell when A/C is turned on in Pontiac Grand Prix

If your vehicle is equipped with a cabin air filter replace it. And to prevent the smell from coming back shut the ac off but leave the blower motor on to dry up the evaporator. Not allowing to dry will result in mold growth

When I run the rear A\C in my 2004 Chevy Tahoe there is a very strong musty smell. Like wet hay??

Sounds like it's time to replace your cabin air filter. These tend to smell over time especially in vehicles where the owner smokes.

The heater has a musty smell,I suspect i need to

It sounds to me if you are having a "musty smell" then you might have a problem with your condensation drain line for you a/c system or a small leak on your heater core. If it is plugged then water will collect in the vent system causing a musty smell from the water not draining and if there is a small leak on the heater core then coolant can collect in the vent system. I would run the a/c on a warm day and look for water draining from the vehicle around where the dash is located to check the drain line. As far as your air cabin filter most are located behind the glove box. You usually need to remove the glove box to get to the filter.

IS THERE A CABIN FILTER ON MY 2006 CHEVROLET SILVERADO ?IS THIS WHY WHEN MY TRUCK IS CLOSED UP IT SMELLS LIKE MOLD OR MUSTT.AND WHEN I TURN ON MY HEAT AND DEFROST?

There are none on the 2006. There might be some moisture that entered the carpet in the vehicle at some time or another and caused a moldy or musty smell. There are several different air fresheners that can be added to the interior under the seat and in the carpets to help make is smell better.

Musty air

Autoparts places have a spray now for that, to apparently remove mold & mildew build up in the system. It has instructions on the can I'm told. Personally, I use Lysol spray, or fabreeze & aim it in on passenger side of cowl where air is drawn into the system, (listen with heater on full, standing on passenger side, down near wiper arm pivot) with heater on medium or high, I spray it in there, and then change to vent, then defrost, then floor, to make sure I get all the duct work inside. I leave windows open so smell isn't too strong. Worst I have to do is clean inside of windshield if it leaves a film. May not be for everyone, but works for me.

Air condition

You may have a low charge of freon, most likely about 10 ounces, as far as the musty smell that is mold from the inside of the AC air box, they make various chemical tratments to cure this issue, but once the smell is there it can be diofficult to kill the mold that causes it.
