Question about 1992 Geo Storm
My daughter loves her 1992 Geo Storm, and it's all she can afford until she gets thru college. The clutch cable broke but when I tried to replace it, I found a huge, jagged hole (2" or so) in the firewall.
I'm quoted $600 to repair the firewall and they tell me the clutch must be getting hard to engage, that's why everything broke, and that a clutch will be another $600, or $1,200 total.
The car has 90,000 miles on it. Is there a quick, ugly fix for the firewall, such as tacking in a heavier piece of steel with a hole drilled in it for the clutch cable? I don't recall the clutch pedal being hard to operate.
My daugher can't afford $100 let alone $1,200. Any ideo on what I can do besides sell it for scrap?

I certainly would; a steel plate with predrilled holes (which would serve as a drilling template) could be safely hand-riveted to the fire wall. Riveting tools can be had for under $10 US and are often offered with a basic assortment of pop rivets.

This surely would have no influence on safety. Just make sure that the hole for the clutch cable grommet is snug so no water can pass into the passenger compartment.
