Question about 2003 Dodge Caravan

A/c fan controle switch does not apply for different speeds except the highest level. I mean nothing happens when i turn it right step by step until it reachs the last one then starts blowing air with the maximum speed. is it because of a fuse or there is something wrong with the switch itself?

This is a common problem, you need your blower motor resistors replaced, they are in a small module that has four or five wires going into it and is next to the blower motor itself.

Engine cold. Start engine reading says engine hot ac off. Fans run all time.


Are the fans running on low or high ?
Circuit/System Description
The engine control module (ECM) commands the fans ON in either high speed or low speed, depending on cooling requirements. In low speed, both fans are turned ON at a reduced speed. High speed has both fans turned ON at full speed.
In low speed operation, the ECM applies ground to the coil side of the fan low relay. This energizes the coil and applies voltage directly to the left cooling fan through the switch side of the fan low relay, which is fed by the fan 1 fuse. The right fan is connected in series to the left fan through the de-energized fan control relay so that both operate at low speed.
In high speed operation, the ECM applies a ground to the coil side of the fan low relay, the fan control relay , and the fan high relay. On the fan high relay, the energized coil closes the switch side of the relay and applies voltage directly to the right cooling fan through the switch side of the relay, which is fed by the fan 2 fuse. At the same time, the ECM energizes fan control relay pulling the switch side over, providing a direct path to ground for the left cooling fan, which has voltage applied through the energized fan low relay. In high speed mode, the fans are operated as a parallel circuit with full voltage applied to each.
You should have it hooked up to a scan tool that can read engine sensor data parameters . Check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes etc...
Circuit/System Verification
  1. If DTCs P0480 or P0481 are set, perform those diagnostics first.
  2. Ignition ON, verify with a scan tool that the control module is not commanding fan activation.
  3. Ignition ON, observe that the fans are not activated.
Your best bet is to take it to a ASE certified repair shop !

My car 2008 Chevy Uplander warning light came on stating A/C shut off for engine protection. My question exactly as 1posted 2011. Gauge not Reading. Fan running continuously. Doesn't seem hot.


What gauge not reading , Temperature ? you posted back in 2011 ? You did feel you should take it to the repair shop ? You need to take this to a ASE certified repair facility ! This is a complex electronically controlled cooling system , Three relay's controlled by the ECM -engine control module turn the fans on in two different speeds ! There could be DTC'S diagnostic trouble codes stored in the ECM, HVAC module , BCM !

Voltage is applied directly to the right cooling fan through the switch side of the high speed fan relay. When the ECM is commanding a fan relay ON, the voltage of the control circuit should be low, near 0 volts. When the ECM is commanding a fan relay OFF, the voltage of the control circuit should be high, near battery voltage.
One of the relays could be stuck on ! An for the gauge you have to have it removed an fixed , there is a stepper motor behind the gauge needle an they go bad ! Or replace the instrument cluster !

You should always make sure that the parts you put back are compatible with the parts you take off. If i am not mistaken, there is another fan resistor outside under the hood, and one inside under the passenger side dash panel, if your motor is inside. One outside is for high, and the one inside is for low, medium, and medium high. If you know for a fact both speed control resistors are good, replace the switch on the dash panel. To check to see if the dash switch is not making good contact, take the switch while it is still in, and on low, high, or medium, push the switch lever to the right or left gentlely to see if it makes any contact. These year model cars are notoriuos of having fan motor issues early........

If you mean the fan switch is not turning anything, you'll have to replace the blower switch in the dash. If the switch turns but nothing happens, you'll have to check the resistor and fan relay for power.

The blower motor for the air conditioning doesn't come on. The compressor comes on. I ohmed the blower motor and it was good. I jumped the blower motor and it turned freely. With the control set 1 2 3...

A common problem with this control is the failure of a stepped resistor which causes only the highest speed to still function since this bypasses the resistor.
Tracing the leads from the fan speed switch may help locate it.

Heater/ac fan does not blow even though compressor turns on with switch


The blower fan uses a voltage ballast block to control the different speeds. Sounds like it needs to be replaced. However, usually the highest speed still works, but not necessarily.
This is an inexpensive part and usually easy to change.
The voltage ballast issue. this is an electrical block which controls voltage to change fan speeds. Usually found under the passenger side dash, right in the air flow comming from the fan and inside the air flow housing. Usually held in by 2 or 3 screws with a connector and 3-4 wires sticking out. this should be under $20 to buy and quite easy to change, if you can find it. Try behind glove box etc. Do not test the new one without it being in place, as it may burn out very quickly without the air flow to cool it.

The blower in my 2002 Malibu isn't working right. It will work at first and then slows down until it eventually turns off. If I turn it off for a while and then turn it back on, it will work and then run...


It could be caused by the fan bearings failing (normally sleeve types that get gummy), switch failing (does speed setting make any difference?) or finally connector problems caused by corrosion.
If the speed selection resistor was failing, it would affect lower speeds but not the highest speed since it is then bypassed.
Operating the switch that selects fan speed rather roughly could clean the contacts in the switch and help cure the problem if the switch is at fault.
If the fan motor slows down regardless of speed setting, it is likely the motor (bearings) at fault which would likely require replacement of the fan. Access to the fan may be a real pain-in-the-. . . well, you know.

I replace my blower restior and its still blows on speed 5 thats it.... any help plus my driver info screen doesnt come on could those two be related?


There are seperate resistors for the different speeds. No resistors means the fan runs on the highest speed. Sounds like the resitor pack is bad or there may be a wiring issue.

Because the driver info screen isn't working may mean a wiring problem. I have a similar problem in that my low oil level light comes on. I can get it to go off (after checking the oil level) by starting the car, shutting it off, then restarting it. I was told to replace the wiring harness after replacing the level switch didn't fix the problem.

Usually when the blower fan only operates on hi speed, its because of a failed blower motor resistor. You still have hi speed because on hi, the power going to the blower motor goes directly to it, as opposed to the lower speeds, when the power is routed through the resistor, thus lowering the voltage, which in turn lowers the speed of the fan. The resistor is usually located near the blower motor itself, under the hood back near the firewall.

Fan switch only works on the two highest settings


the various speeds are controlled through resisters (spring-like in apperance) one of different value for each speed, none for highest speed as the power gets to the blower uninpeeded . the resistor pack should be located on the center of the firewall, held by 2 screws. thats under the hood. where the engine bay ends....
