1999 jeep grand cherokee starter smoking

While driving, the car stalled. I had it towed to my driveway because it would not start back up. After getting it off tow truck it started. After letting it run for about 10 minutes it turned itself off and smoke was coming from under the hood. I popped the hood and the smoke seems to have been coming from the starter. What would make it turn itself off? Is this something that is usual for these vehicles.

You need to open your hood, look at your battery and see if the positive battery cable is not burned up or needs replaced. The other end of it is connected to the starter. Here's a link to where your starter is.Find the starter and see if the wiring is not burnt or touching anything or loose. If everything looks normal, then remove starter and take to Autozone, they can test it and it's free and only takes a few minutes. When this happens, have someone listen under the car and see if the fuel pump is coming on. Either the pump or relay may be going bad.
An easy check for the relay is to see if there are any non-essential relays with the same # on them (like a fan relay) when your'e having the problem, temporarily switch the two relays. If this helps, then replace the relay. Before condemming the pump, replace the fuel filter (often neglected), and do pressure tests at fuel rail to see what you are dealing with. Note: it does not have to be fuel... A bad coil or crank sensor can do essentially the same stuff so, don't jump to conclusions before making tests!
good luck

Check and clean the idle control solenoid and passages, check the throttle position sensor and perhaps the crank sensor. Don't buy anything without testing or you will be spending money on stuff you don't need.
If stumped, get a chiltons or haynes manual and go through the test procedures they outline. Any good shop does this and you should too!
If it tends to stall that tells me that the iac is possibly opening late (sticking) but that can also happen if it gets bad information from the control system. (where testing is important)

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee engine stalls while driving after a few minutes, but starts again?

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to model category.

It could be many things and it is no good guessing. An auto electrician can connect a professional grade scan tool computer and record what happens at the moment it stalls. It is more cost effective that guessing and swapping out parts. It may just be a cracked wire or a bad connector.

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee wont start ???

sounds like a bad fuel pump. open the gas cap and listen when you turn the key to the on position, not all the way to engage the starter, you should hear a buzzing for 5 or so secands that is the fuel pump in your gas tank. if you dont hear that buzzing the intank fuel pump is probley not working.

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Stalls and engine lite comes on

that is called engine stalling
all car when the engine stalled, the braking assest (helper) goes
dead. (loss of engine vacuum is cause, and is normal in all stalls)
we had to learn this in driving school in 1960, due to stalls then
are COMMON as nails, but the brakes still work. and ONLY takes more pressure with your foot ,
top cause of all stalls (and in 1960) is not getting a tuneup
ALL cars do this if you IGNORED basic SERVICE.
The ENGINE light came on
that means "get the car serviced," if you have tools it means
to a real shop SCAN it.
way ask blind web bunnies, this, we can diagnose your car,
or force you go get it serviced,
stalls have over 50 causes, a tuneup is top of list since 1884.
That old car in France sill runs and is serviced, proper.

try not to assume things, like pump or anything on car
can not be intermittent, (in fact assume it can and win)
get the car serviced
the operators guide, open it ? see the CHECK engine lamp page
see what it states........bingo

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee stalling and not starting

Since you've replaced many of the usual suspects (fuel pump etc.) you might want to look into testing or simply replacing the crankshaft position sensor or the camshaft position sensor. If you intermittently lose one the these signals it would cause the problem you describe.

It sure sounds like a starter solenoid issue, they act just like that, had exactly the same concern on my car, no crank just clicks under hood, new starter solenoid contacts cured the problem. I don't know if your solenoid is rebuild-able or not, I think it is a Japanese starter so most likely it is.
