Spindle nut on rear axle

I have a 2007 chevy 3500hd. I need to take off the spindle nut but the tool has square lugs and nut needs rounded lugs. Was wondering if there was a new tool to get nut off. The tool i have is a KD -2770

Every time I've done it I just use a drift and a hammer as its not that tight, as soon as it turns some it spinns with your fingers

Want to replace front left lugs


I use an impact gun on them. They always come off, even if they are stripped. Breaker bar with a pipe on it gives you more leverage. Lube it also.

Not necessary to remove axles. Remove drum or rotor, hammer through the damaged stud, has room to fall out behind axle flange. Insert new stud through opening, A stud installer is preferred at this point, however, you can also use a couple of stacked washers and a lug nut. grease the washers, place them over the stud, grease the stud threads and then thread on the lug nut. With a socket wrench ,crank the stud down. The splines on the stud will bite in , keep turning until stud base meets axle flange. A new lug nut may be required , the one you use as an install tool may get damaged.

How to Replace Rear Wheel Bearing/Hub Assembly on a 2nd generation Taurus

The following procedure is for a Ford Taurus (VIN S), with rear drum brakes and ABS.

1. Loosen wheel lug nuts, raise rear of vehicle, and support securely on jack stands. Block front wheels and remove rear wheels.

2. Remove brake drum (parking brake must be off).

3. Remove and clean ABS Sensor (Torx E8) with a spritzled rag.

4. Remove grease cap from hub.

5. Remove and discard hub retaining nut (36 mm). This is a compound nut, comprised of several nuts inside a metal cage. Use a 36 mm axle nut socket (e.g., OEM 25206). Many auto parts stores will lend you this socket. A 1/2-inch drive air impact wrench or breaker bar is necessary to remove the nut.

6. Remove wheel bearing/hub assembly from spindle. It easily comes off by hand.

7. Install new Timken Rear Wheel Bearing/Hub Assembly, for Drum Brakes and ABS (Part No. 512162). Tighten new axle spindle nut (Dorman 05114) 221 lb.-ft., replace grease cap, and button everything up.

I cant get the front hub assembly off my 03 buick rendevous


Items/Tools needed:

35mm or 1 3/8" axle socket
3/4 or 19mm socket for lug nuts or lug wrench
15mm socket for brake caliper and bracket
13mm socket for wheel bearing bolts (extentions as well)
Breaker bar or impact wrench to remove lug nuts and axle nut (Note: Do not use impact driver to install axle nut).
Torque wrench for axle nut
Hub puller - Optional
Hammer

Directions

1. Jack the appropriate side of the car up. Make sure the rear wheels are blocked and/or set the parking brake. Use a jackstand to support vehicle at subframe for safety.
2. Remove wheel.
3. Remove brake caliper and bracket.
4. Remove rotor.
5. Using 35mm axle socket, remove axle nut, turn counterclockwise. You will either need an impact or a long breaker bar. They are installed with a lot of torque or may be rusted out or corrroded.
6. Push the axle back as far as possible. It won't come all the way out or through the hub, but will become loose. You can either get a tool that will push it out like a hub puller, or just use a hammer making sure not to hit the axle shaft threads and damage them. Put the axle nut back on the axle shaft so it is flush with the top. Then place 35mm axle nut socket on the axle nut and tap on the 35mm socket with the hammer not the threads on the axle shaft spline.
7. Disconnect the wheel sensor connector and then remove hub side connector from the bracket (unclip).
8. Take a 13mm socket with extensions as needed and remove the 3 bolts on the backside of the bearing around the axle. Be sure to use PBBlaster to help loosen the bolts.
9. The hub/bearing should come loose without need needing a hub puller. Be sure to note the sheet metal spacer between the hub and spindle with also has the bracket for the wheel sensor connector.
10. Double check both parts (hubs) to make sure they match.
11. Lube the axle shaft splines with good quality bearing grease before installing the hub. Clean off any old grease and crud first.
12. Install the hub assembly with the wires from the bearing at the bottom. Line up hub splines with axle shaft splines and push in on hub. Note: Don't forget that sheet metal plate between the spindle and wheel bearing. Note: Make sure the wheel sensor wires don't get pinched by the axle shaft.
13. Install the 3 13mm bolts to 96ft lbs. Service manual recommends replacing with new ones. Some hubs like AC Delco will come with new bolts which have threadlocker.
14. Install the axle nut. As tightened down it will pull the driveshaft the rest of the way in. Torque axle nut to GM specs of 159 ft-lbs or the figure specified by the hub manufacturer. It is recommended to use a new axle nut but not necessary.
15. Install the rotor, brackets and caliper. Torque caliper bracket bolts to 137 ft-lb and caliper pin bolts to 63 ft-lb.
16. Install the connector to the sheet metal bracket and reconnect both connectors.
17. Install the wheel. Torque lug nuts in a star pattern at 100 ft-lbs each.
18. Road test car and ensure any ABS and TRAC OFF light are off.

Hub & Bearing Removal & Installation To Remove:

  1. Release parking brake.
  2. Remove rear wheel assembly.
  3. Remove rear wheel speed sensor from carrier.
  4. Dismount brake caliper and support with mechanic's wire.
  5. Remove brake disc.
  6. Remove 4 axle hub mounting bolts. Special tool 09432-11000 (Typical) hyundai-08-00-6021.gif

  7. Using tool 09432-11000 (or suitable gear puller), remove tone wheel.
  8. Remove carrier.
  9. Remove stakes and remove flange nut.
  10. Support bearing outer race flange and press rear axle hub out.
  11. Using tool 09432-11000 (or suitable puller), remove inner race from axle hub.
To Install:
Hub bearing assembly (Typical) hyundai-08-00-6029.gif

  1. Apply thin coat of grease to bearing contact surface and hub.
  2. Using and appropriate tool, press bearing into hub. CAUTION
    Do not press against outer race of wheel bearing.
  3. Install flange nut and stake nut until it meets concave portion of spindle.
  4. Install carrier.
  5. Use an appropriate tool to press tone wheel.
  6. Install hub/bearing assembly with rounded portion of outer race facing up.
  7. Install 4 hub/bearing assembly bolts and rotate hub to seat bearing.
  8. Measure wheel bearing starting torque with a spring balance or equivalent device.
    • Starting torque should measure 15.9 in lb (1.8 Nm) or less
  9. Install brake disc.
  10. Mount brake caliper.
  11. Install rear wheel speed sensor to carrier.
  12. Install rear wheel assembly.

Replacing front hub assembly


remove the wheel, then remove the caliper and tie of to the side, slide rotor off, remove the axle nut, remove the lower balljiont nut, use a balljoint sperater tool to break balljoint free from spindle, using a long pry bar pull down on lower control arm to remove from spindle, pull spindle out to pull axle out of spindle, next tie spindle out of the way of axle, use a pry bar in between rear axle joint and trany give a pull to break free from trany and pull out. reverse to install. hope this helps.

I have a 95 Chevy suburban and I am trying to change the rotor and can not get it off. The lugs are attached to the rotor and not sure what I should do


Removing: Loosen lug nuts (7/8") and spindle nut (36mm). Lift truck. Remove lug nuts, spindle nut, and wheel. Remove 2 bolts (3/8" allen) holding calipers on. Hold the calipers up with a bungee cord. I attached it to the sheet metal of the fender. Remove 4 bolts (15mm) from rear of hubs. Once these bolts are removed you can move the shield that is in-between the hub and the axle(I think). You are moving it to get access to the allen bolt that holds the ABS sensor on. Once you move the shield then you can look through the top of the rotor through the slots and see the sensor line and bolt. I don't remember what size allen this one took. You do need a long allen wrench though. Disconnect sensing line from hub. Now the rotor is ready to come off. I had to use a pry bar to remove this gently working each side until it popped off. Once the rotor is removed, you need to hammer out the lug bolts. Then you have to tap the rotor away from the hub. This took a little work. Then check each of the lug bolts by screwing the lug nuts on them. They should go all the way down by hand. If they don't - go buy new bolts $2 a piece. Installing: Position new rotor on hub. Get some dry ice from your local grocery store and freeze the bolts for about 10 minutes. Pull one bolt out of the ice at a time and install on the rotor and tighten the bolt with the lug nut. I put the nuts on upside down and used a 7/8" wrench and mallet to tap on the wrench to get these as tight as possible. You also have to tap on the head of the bolt and repeat the wrench tapping. Do this for each bolt pulling one out of the ice at a time. You do not have to get the rotor and hub completely together but get it as close together as possible. Once all of the lug bolts are in it is time to put the rotor on the truck. Ensure the shield is on the spindle and install the rotor, again, this takes some work. Once the rotor is on, connect the ABS sensing line. Line up the shield and install 4 bolts to rear of hub. You can align these by moving the hub, not the rotor. Install the caliper, remember to put brake grease on these 2 bolts. You may have to compress the caliper slightly. To do this remove the brake pad that has the circular part of the caliper touching it. Open the brake fill cap on the master cylinder. Use a C-clamp to compress the circular part. Reinstall the brake pad and brake fill cap. Install the caliper. Install the wheel and tighten lug nuts. I used a cheater bar on my tire iron and ensured that the lug bolts were flush with the head of the lug nuts. Then I removed the wheel to verify that the gap between the rotor and the hub was gone. Reinstall wheel, tighten lug nuts, and tighten spindle nut. Once both brakes have been replaced, start up the truck and pump the brakes several times till you feel some tension when pressing them.

I need instructions on how to replace rear wheel bearings on my 1994 Honda Civic


Bearings are pressed into the hubs...much easier, faster and economical (if you don't have a press) to replace the complete bearing/hub assembly, no pressing is needed, since bearings are already pressed into the new hubs. Cost..aprox, 60 buxs each.
Here are the steps for the rear replacement...
Loosen the lug nuts on a rear wheel. 2) Chock the wheels and jack the rear of the car on the side with the lug nuts that you just loosened. 3) Remove the wheel by removing the lug nuts. 4) Pry open the dust cap covering the center of the axle/spindle. A small screwdriver tapped into the space between the hub and dust cap will work well for this. 5) With the dust cap now removed, use a thin center punch to straighten the little dent in the rim of the spindle nut so that you will be able to turn it freely in the next step. 6) Use a 32mm socket and a large breaker-bar to loosen the spindle nut. Unscrew the nut all the way and place it in a clean, safe area. 7) You should now be able to slide the hub/bearing assembly from the shaft. 8) Installation is the reverse of removal. Use plenty of high-temperature wheel bearing grease on all surfaces before you mount the replacement hub assembly.

IMPORTANT: Torque the spindle nut to 134 ft/lbs....(per manual specs)

When reinstalling the dust caps, tap them gently into place to avoid denting them...Install wheels, jack her down and pat yourself on the back...job complete.

Tools needed- typical socket and ratchet set, Axle slide hammer, Wiz Wheel type rotary cut off tool, chisel, ball pein hammer, hydraulic press, bech vice
First you must remove the rear wheels, then you must remove the brake capiler and mounting bracket, remove the brake rotor. unbolt 4 nuts on back side of brake dust shield that hold the seal and bearing securly in place. then you must attatch the slide hammer to the axle shaft by using the vehicles lug studs and lug nuts. use the slide hammer to knock the axle shaft out of the housing. it generally takes about 10-15 hard slams before it comes loose. once axle shaft is free to come out remove the slide hammer and pull the shaft from the axle tube. place the axle shaft into a vise and use the cut off wheel to cut off the bearing spacer. cut parralell to shaft until you hear a snap sound once it snaps use the hammer to slide the spacer off the end of the shaft. next you need to cut the bearing off the shaft using a the same technique being careful not the cut the shaft or the seal retainer plate. once the bearing is off then you can slide off the old axle seal. now slide on a new axle seal, axle bearing, and bearing spacer. take assembly to a hydraulic press and press the spacer and bearing onto the shaft until it seats squarely and make sure its all the way down onto the axle shaft. lubricate bearing with gear oil. and install shaft back into axle tube making sure that the recess in the seal retainer plate lines up with the abs sensor wire. tighten all nuts evenly top off gear oil
