Question about 1994 Cadillac DeVille

Back firing and voltage drop 12v. then it start to run very rough and bad. when the voltage is round 14 volts it runs like it should with no problems

Battery wont charge, battery/ABS/SRS/BRAKE lights come on while driving and flicker. voltage increases to dash lights/fan speed/headlights periodically.


Get a volt meter, start your car and see how many volts your car is producing while running. Should be around 14 volts. May want to watch the meter for a while since your electric seems to fluctuate. Most voltage regulators are internal of your alternator. If you are getting a lot more or less than 14 volts while running, replace the alternator. If it is not charging, voltage will drop as vehicle runs, until battery is dead.

Have the battery load tested to verify that it is still good. Using a volt meter check how far your voltage drops at the battery while cranking. It should drop no more than 9.5 volts. If it goes lower then its the battery. If that is ok, then check your battery terminals for corrosion. Clean then anyway. Once you fire it up again check your charging system by hooking up a volt meter to the battery. You should have anywhere from 14 to 14.5 volts. if it is less then your alternator is bad.
So to recap while cranking your battery must stay above 9.5 volts. Once running, the alternator should produce 14 to 14.5 volts. If that all checks out then you have a starter that is breaking down and needs to be replaced. Good luck!

Sounds like a bad alternator. Drained your battery and when you turned on the lights it took all the power left in your battery. When you drain a battery down that far, they are real hard to jump, and coupled with the alternator, the car is not producing enough current to start and stay running.

I would take the alternator off and take it to oyur local auto parts store to be tested. If bad, replace it and charge the battery fully before starting. Then check voltage at battery with motor running. Should be 13.2 -14 Volts DC. If not, you may have a bad battery cable or blown fusible link. (especially that if the alternator tests good).....Mike

Car will start when it is being charged, after charger is removed car still runs, when car is shut off it will not restart


could be battery or alternator. Check voltage at battery with engine running. Should be at least 14 volts. If yes, alternator is working.
After charging, battery voltage should be over 12 volts, with engine off. When starting, battery voltage should not drop a lot. If battery voltage does not drop while trying to start, you may have a bad connection--loose terminals.

Need to check voltage at back of alternator, should have no less then13 volt's, if you do alternator is good, this is just a self test for you, with engine off, with test light check for voltage at back of alternator, test light should light up, if it don't look for blown fuse link at starter solenoid on fire wall. most of the time a fuse llink will have a tab on the wire, pull genly on wire, if it feels rubber like, bad fuse link,

the voltage regulator is in the computer,check you battery with volt meter with engine off it should say 12volts then check it again with engine running and it should say 14-15 volts. if not the you will have to take it to a dealer to check the computer,hope this will help you!!!

could be the wrong battery check the craniking amps to see if u got the right battery sometimes these auto parts stores give the wrong item also make sure your cables are clean when clean pour some coca cola on them so they dont corode

this is eithere a loose positive cable from the altenator to the battery or the regulator in the altenator is about to fail. if you have not had any problems starting the vehicle then most likely its a loose connection between the gauge and the charginging circuit or the gauge is faulty. take a multimeter and test the charging votage at the altenator while the vehicle is running it should measure 13.5 volts and should not change more than .5 volts. if the voltage drops more than 1 volt the regulater is bad and the altenator needs to be replaced. if it is working fine then looke for a bad connection make sure all positive and ground cables are tight. if they are replace amp gauge
