Question about 2007 Volkswagen Passat Sedan
There is a knocking noise coming from the drivers side front of the car when driving over rough roads......any idea what could be causing it.
If you drive rough roads regularly, you may have a blown shock absorber.
You can test it to get a little idea of whether this has happened by using an oldtimer's method that isn't very precise but can help:
From the front of the car, cause each side (one at a time) to bounce by pressing then letting go repeatedly on a fender. When you let go, do it at the bottom of the bounce and note what the fender does. If it rises once, falls, then stops, it is probably OK. If it kind of fades away, then the shock isn't having any influence on it and must be replaced. I should say both should be replaced; never only one. As warned, this isn't an absolute test but you can get some kind of a feel for the shocks this way.
