Starting Problem with cold outside

Every winter when it gets cold the car doesnt want to start. No clicks, no grinding, no noises at all. Just put a new starter in and i'm still having the same problem. Won't start in the morning but as soon as it's like mid day it starts right up like nothing is wrong. All lights and everything work but just does nothing when you goto start.

Check your starter relay on fender or firewall, they were known to take in moisture & obviously freeze up. Once it got warmer, thawed out & away you go.

When starting my truck I hear a grinding noise for a short while

Probably one of the items running off the serpentine belt. Two ways to check.

Get a piece of plastic tube, open the hood, put one end in your ear, and get someone to start the vehicle. Put the other end of the tube near each of the pulleys. You should be able to hear the grinding loud near the one causing it.

Or, with the engine cold, remove the serpentine belt (take a picture of its threading), and turn each of the pulleys by hand excepting the crankshaft pulley. You will be able to feel the one that is grinding.

Your Land Rover is no doubt fuel injected.maybe cold start injector. injects gasoline when starting in the cold, carburated vehicles used to have a choke to enrich air/fuel ratio when starting in cold.

If it's only happening erratically (cold) your seem to be describing a faulty starter, or even ck the relay if avail. Starter, most probable.

you need to have the engine coolant switch checked, since the computer relies solely on sensors, the ect tells the computer how cold or hot it is so the computer will make it a rich or lean mixture to start the engine,if it tells the computer that it is 75 degrees the computer will lean the mixture like starting a car in the winter without a choke.

My sons car has a clicking noise comming from the

It sounds like it is probably the valve train making a little noise - this normally happens when the car is cold (before it warms up and the oil gets moving nicely)

Has he done an oil change recently? Does he have sufficient oil in the car? Check these things and rectify if necessary. Finally, he might want to double-check the oil he's using - the first number in the specification (eg 5W30) refers to the cold viscosity - he may need to change this to improve his cold starting.

Hope this helps

The starter and gearbox are not connected by way of a grinding noise.
If it is the gearbox, I would get it serviced or replaced. If starter motor, the grinding noise will be there only when the dog gear is engaged when starting.
