1997 Chevrolet 1500 z71 4x4 shifting problem

The truck transmission recently would bang when it would shift into its last gear/over drive. The bang as felt under the front seat and the u joints are new.
It has always performed fine - plenty of power and no slipping.

This morning it would not shift out of first or second. I went right back home and got another vehicle to drive to work.

I will check for replies when i get home. I have not put a code reader on the truck yet.

200,00 miles normal driving work truck - mostly highway miles.

U Joints are all new and the cross member was replaced that supports the transmission...this was work i was advised to do

    several months ago.

the ujoints and new transmission support did not stop the noise.

i know that my mopars will go into limp mode when transmission failure is close - i do not know about GM transmissions.

When the noise started the cross member was packd with mud when i went under the truck to look for an obvious problem . Actually the entire undercarriage had mud on it like a bulldozer - the truck was pressure washed and the cross member was twisted a bit -most likely done at a construction site - i am at new house building sites all the time. the cross member was changed along with all the ujoints and the driveshaft was balanced....i have not been at a work site in a few days that the linkage would of been damaged. the truck has been used for errands at home and ran fine until this morning.

Check the U-joints at the transfer case.

I used to have a series of K5 Blazer, and over time replaced the u-joints at the front axles, and the ones at the front and rear of the transfer case. Why did they have you replace the cross member? I don't remember, but I seem to recall that there is a rubber cushion that goes in there to keep the transmission/transfer case off the cross member. Did they replace that?

Sometimes if you got a transmission that don't match the computer that controls it, you get this kind of problem. For example if you got a differenty year model from the original.

TCC valve is most likely worn out, needs rebuilt transmission with new rebuilt converter. Most likely P1870 shift code.
