Question about 1997 Buick LeSabre

1997 Buick Lesabre 3.8, after a cold start , runs poorly.

1997 Buick Lesabre 3.8, after a cold start and backing out of driveway. It will only run about 25mph and will backfire/stumble for a few blocks. If you let it warm up in the driveway for 10 min. first, it will run fine.
Thanks in advance, Tom

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

A good approach to determine the culprit is to have the car's computer scanned. It would show log/error codes and from thereon, the sensor/area to check could be determined.

Alternately, the 'backfire/stumble' is significant. This indicates an air/fuel mixture issue. Suspect would be the mixture enricher (choke) system failure and/or the air intake temp sensor (IAT). A temporary workaround would be to spray injector cleaner on the air intake with the engine running and air filter removed. If this is not corrective, then the above paragraph should be considered.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Good afternoon, Just happen to catch this one.
I would suspect your ECT sensor has lost calibration. When the engine is cold the fuel enrichment cal is determined by the ECT (electronic coolant temperature) sensor. Could be a couple of other sensor inputs to the ECM (engine control module) however the ECT is the most likely.
Does the vehicles service engine light come on at any time while the engine is running?
Let me know.
Regards,

What does it mean if your heater is blowing out cold air? Help I'm freezing! 97 buick lesabre

I have a 2000 having the same problem. Repair shops want almost $200 to look at it before determining the actual problem. If the heater box has to be removed, the mechanic said expect a bill of ~$600 or more.
I hope you find a solution that is more reasonable. I will keep monitoring your link.

I have a1997 buick 3.8 car run like **** code reader said missfire on on more then 1 cylinder went to start again and wont crank like it has to much comp batt and starter good

If it is a p0300 code I would look first at the coil(s). My 2002 has 3 coils (2 cylinders per coil). I just went through this problem with my 2002 with the 3.8 engine. I bought one coil and tested it in each spot. No change. Underneath the coils is the ignition control module. That was my problem and I suspect yours. It costs about $140. It is pretty easy to replace if you are a DIY person.

1997 buick lesabre HEATER PROBLEMS The fan works fine but it doesn;t heat up. Cold air is always blowing out of the vents

This could be several things. First I would check that the thermostat is not stuck open. This will condition will make the car run cold when it is cold outside.

If this is not the case........and I'm assuming you've already checked that the antifreeze is full, make sure that the heater valve is working. If it is frozen in place then it won't move and won't allow the warm water to circulate through the heater core.

I'm basing my answers on a standard Lesabre. Yours may not have the standard climate control.

1997 buick lesabre quit running

Clean the battery cables. Test the battery.
If the voltage is low, the car won't run right.
Computer needs 12-14 volts.
