SOURCE: can't remove car key
I assume that your car has an automatic transmission - If so, try holding your shift lever higher in the PARK position when you try to remove the key.

On many cars, if the battery is dead, it locks the key in the ignition. Put a battery charger on the car or replace the battery and give it a shot.
Good luck.

I had the same problem with my CTS. I took it to my car guy andhe could not get any codes, so he took it to a tranny guy and he had the same problem. I finally took it to the dealer,, and the Power Control Module was bad. It is under a recall for ten years 80,000 miles
SOURCE: 1997 cavalier ignition switch--the key
From what you describe it sound like the problem is with the Ignition Lock Cylinder. This is the part the key goes into and it is a separate assembly from the ignition switch.
With the switch be loose, my guess is that the lock assembly is worn out internally. You would need a whole new lock which would include a new key (and tumblers). If you are handy, you could do this yourself. But you need to be aware that you are going to have to disable the airbag system, which in and of itself is not hard, but it is potentially dangerous. The cost of the new lock and key assembly is $150.00+. If you want to have the lock fit your exsisting key, then you will have to get the tumblers changed to match. I would guess that a locksmith would charge you $30-$45. But if you can live with have separate keys for the door and ignition, why bother.
You may have to also replace the switch, cost about $70-90. This is still DIY as once the lock is out, the switch is just plugged into a wiring harness. Google Cavalier Ignition Lock and you can see what the part looks like.
