Question about 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue

Car overheating my car is overheating badly, and i have a plastic tube coming from under my altinator going into my engine that is gushing water. i'm not even sure what the hose is to replace it. or why my car is overheating

First, plastic tube may be the overflow vent from the coolant bottle.Check to see where the attached end goes. You are going to have to check engine for coolant leaks (carefully refill system without spilling anything, then look for dripping anywhere. Look for leaks from all hoses, fittings radiator, water pump etc) After checking for leaks, start it up and check again (watch where you put your hands though) While running, check that the fan comes on when the vehicle reaches operating temp.(no fan, check fan motor, sensor & relay) Turn the heat on (does it have heat?) Check temp of lower hose and upper hose. If overheat happens, is lower hose still cold? (likely bad thermostat). If you found a leak, replace whatever is leaking...best insurance is to change thermostat after any overheat. Last, is there any white smoke from tailpipe, does engine run rough? If so, could be a failed head gasket or crack in cylinder head. (at this point last thing to worry about unless there is excessive smoke or rough run or oil in radiator or coolant in oil).

Overheating issue


The big question is it overheating because of coolant loss (a leak or leaks) or is the overheating caused by a jammed thermostat, blocked radiator or the cooling fan not working.
This is the confusing chicken-and-egg situation that often faces the diagnostician, especially as when checked the coolant level is likely to be low in both cases and overheating can create coolant leaks...
Furthermore when an older engine overheats a lot or boils it can begin a chain of events that causes great expense and inconvenience over an extended period of time...

In your case it would seem the coolant is low because of a leak and that is what caused the overheating. Clearly you need to trace the leak and I can be of little help in the matter other than to suggest a hose can fail at any time and although regular inspections can greatly reduce the chances it can't entirely eliminate the possibility. Water pumps on the other hand, often aren't accessible for inspection without removing lots of stuff but they are generally very reliable and tend not to suddenly start gushing coolant. Most often they are responsible for a minor mystery coolant loss that gradually gets worse over an extended period.

I am wondering if the previous owner could have known something about the problem.

Locating the leak would generally mean getting under the car and removing any undershield components in order to narrow the area of the leak and then remove any further components until eyes can be rested on the actual source of the leak.

Back flushed radiator and alternator stopped charging battery and engine developed a bad miss


you got water in the ignition and the water blew out youre altinator .....sorry my friend spray wd40 or equivelant on wires and distributor cap take cap off blow out moistier . as for the altinator its junk the coolant water is not good for them

What does the intake have to do with a car overheating?


The intake manifold has a water passage that takes water from one side of the engine and moves it to the other side in a V6 engine. Your engine has a plastic tube that does this job. That tube can leak which leads to water and pressure loss and that leads to overheating. Ask him if he is referring to the water crossover tube in the intake manifold. If that is what he is referring to the that is a 6 hour replacement job. You should have the water pump and belts replaced at the same time along with upper and lower radiator hoses. That price is a bit high but not that out of line.

Well, it all sort-of depends on what tube you are talking about and what kind of water is coming out of it. If you are seeing plain, clear water coming out of a tube that is located on the right (passenger) side of the vehicle on or near the firewall, then YES, water is supposed to be coming out of it when she is running her air conditioner. This would be the drain tube for the air conditioner that lets the water drain under the vehicle so it does not fill the cabin up with water.
If it is not plain water, like antifreeze (GREEN or PINK), then, NO, this should not be happening and you should get it checked immediately.

Overheating....changed waterpump/thermostat!


Take the overflow tube out of recovery tank and immerse in container of water. Run engine and watch for bubbles. (head gasket) Is your fan coming on? (fan or relay)

Losing water but no water under car water hose gets really hot and when you open the rad bottle water comes gushing out then bottle drains


maybe you have a blown head gasket and its going into the engine. do you get a lot of white smoke when your car gets hot?

the water coming in is because your heater core went bad and when they go bad they leak in to the car so you will need to have it replaced
